The Czech firm was hoping it would be three wins in three years for the latest Octavia, but in the end the top-value family model has had to settle for third place.

With a Driver Power record no other car can match, notching up its fourth podium position is still a brilliant result.

Comfort is its one weakness – while 38th is hardly a disgrace, it’s the Octavia’s lowest rating. Third place for practicality is the highlight, and with the facelifted variant now on sale, these ratings could get a boost.

It hasn’t matched its previous successes, but there are few better family models available.

WINNER OF CATEGORY - Practicality

If you gauge the appeal of your new car on how much you can fit inside, it’s essential you read our practicality chart. The winning car has the highest average rating in any of our judging categories. Land Rover’s latest Discovery scored a formidable 99.15 per cent. When it comes to carrying people and luggage, nothing else comes close. With seven occupants on board, there’s still room for 280 litres of luggage, while in two-seat form, the volume grows to an incredible 2,558 litres. Space efficiency counts for a lot, too, which is why Honda’s Jazz holds second place, thanks to its clever folding rear seats and a light and spacious interior. Both MkI and MkII MINIs are in the last five. It seems owners aren’t happy with the tight rear space and tiny boot.

“I can’t name another car in the same class that does as good a job as the Octavia. It’s immensely satisfying to drive and own – Skoda seems to get everything right.

Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 1st)

Congratulations to Skoda – it’s the first firm ever to knock Lexus off the top of this chart! A consistently strong performance across the range proved decisive, with the Superb and Octavia starring.

Brilliant, I love it, and am having a hard time deciding whether to just keep it or replace it. It's not the best looking car, the ride is a bit firm, but very tolerable for the handling that gives. The economy is a little disappointing, being in the low 40's rather than about 50, it has a big appetite for front tyres, but has more than acceptable performance goes like stink, handles brilliantly, and will quite happily carry 4 adults and all the luggage for a fortnight's holiday.
I would recommend it to anyone who needs a bit of carrying space but likes a sporty car.

The best car i have ever owned and i have had 16 car to date, a mixture of many manufactures and none have been as good as my skoda. I own the VRS model and it is very hard to find another car that does everything so well, even cars that cost up to £25,000 don't come close. We also own a Ford Focus that would cost more when new than the Skoda and it is a joke in terms of performance, comfort, equipment and quality. It goes to show how much we as buyers of cars are ripped off because of the badge on the front if Skoda can produce a car that good for so little money.

very pleasantly surprised by a car i bought on price-"vat free" and 0% finance. Skoda punches above its weight. Good build quality &performance. Good sevice from dealer as well. You have to ask the question as to why other manufacturers charge thousands more for cars of no better or worse quality. Skoda is no longer a joke and the restyled front is bang up to date in which is a VW engine and Audi suspension. Forget the badge | Go for a bargain| Thousands of taxi drivers whose cars excede 150000 miles cannot be wrong

I own an Octavia vRS TDi, it is my first diesel car and has performance to put alot of petrol cars to shame combined with simply amazing fuel economy. The car is understated looking but has sharp handling, is very practical and is a bargin considering the equipment level it has. An equivalent Audi A4 may cost nealy 50% as much! Only down side was that curtain airbags were an option and not standard.

The Octavia 4X4's performance and handling are quite remarkable - the best I'd found even against cars costing considerably more. Overall it has been very reliable and trustworthy over the 8 years we've owned it. Servicing costs have been very modest, and the dealer does a very good job in sorting out any minor niggles that need attention during servicing. A bit of a "Q-car"! Highly recommended.

Excellent compromise between performance and economy. My last car was a prodrive impreza which, although extremely rapid, drank like my auntie Margaret at a funeral! The skoda has been remapped, has 207 bhp and averages 34 to the gallon...14 more than the scooby! It's quiet, well-behaved and eats up the miles. If I could afford the latest one, it would certainly be on my shortlist.

140 bhp engine with dsg gearbox wonderful, steering handling comfort all below par cruise control was faulty they wouldn't believe me so it seemed and nearside doors wouldn't close properly found another garage to do the job and charge supplying dealer as they said there was nothing wrong the doors with after sales service like this I'll spend my money elsewhere next time.

This is my third OCTAVIA, the first and second were 1.6FSI autos in Elegance trim, the new car is a 1.4TSI DSG in elegance trim. Nothing has gone wrong with any of the cars and the current vehicle has exceeded all my expectations, it is comfortable, fast, extremely well built and excellent value for money, I cannot imagine deserting the brand.

Apart from a drive shaft/differential problem which was diligently diagnosed and then Skoda paid for it - the car has performed very well - in particular in it's 4x4 mode (Octavia varient is a Scout). Small concern that the economy is not as good as hoped compared with previous model, but it does achieve published economy levels.

I am very impressed with the overall practicality, performance and reliability of the car. Buying the car from new I studied carefully the merits of other cars and settled on the Skoda as the best overall, I have not been disappointed in any way. I still get the odd snigger about the Skoda brand, but its their loss.

My Octavia has done 120k miles and owes me nothing. It has been superb every since it was delivered to my home 9 years ago. Other than tyres, brakes and the odd fuse, the only work that has been needed in those nine years are the recent replacement of the front bearings.

It does everything I ask of it, fast when I want, tows a caravan excellently, has a huge boot, small enough to park easily, all the extras I want and need. AND being a Skoda it doesnt attract the attention of the theiving scum that inhabit this wonderful country of ours.

My Octavia (a vRS estate) has the same mechanicals and equally good build quality as an Audi A4 for £6,000 less. A workhorse and performance car all in one - excellent. And it's faster than my other car, an old BMW Z3.
