Nurburgring 24-hour race start

Carving its way through the Eifel Mountains in western Germany is the ultimate challenge in motoring – the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

300 metres of elevation change, 80 corners and over 12 miles of Armco-lined tarmac – the Nordschleife is unlike any other racing track, but for many people their introduction to this mystical place has come in the virtual world.

Faithfully recreated on the Gran Turismo 4 PlayStation game, the 82-year old ‘Ring has come to life in more than 50 million homes across the globe.

But how does this compare to the real thing? To find out, watch the start of this year’s Nurburgring 24-hour race on-board with Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator and producer of the Gran Turismo game.

Famed for his attention to detail and the recreation of a ‘real car’ feel in his virtual vehicles, Kazunori is no ordinary novice racer - Kazunori explained that “I’ve covered nearly 2,000 virtual laps and while real racing is obviously far scarier, the driver’s actions and the lines taken through the corners are the same as in the game.”

So enjoy the opening lap of the 2010 Nurburgring 24 hours with Kazunori in a 5.0-litre V8 Lexus IS F.
