Opel is launching the Astra C at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, and the design is more daring than the next generation VW Golf, expected to debut at the same show.

The style template for the unusually dynamic and completely new boxy look comes from the Signum which will already be available at the dealers at that time. But: While the Golf will be on sale just after its launch in Frankfurt, buyers of the new Astra will have to wait until spring 2004 before they'll receive their new car.

A particularly noticeable feature is the very flat windscreen. And since length and wheelbase of the new Astra will be a good hand longer than the previous model, it is likely to be a real marvel of space. Exterior will be dominated by a more edgy look combined with huge headlamps and taillights as well as a prominent grille. The technical base, however, will remain the current Astra's platform, though refined in all details.

Engine-range will consist of four-cylinder units only (including two GDIs), starting with a 1.4-litre drivetrain (75 HP) and crowned by a 2.2-litre motor with around 200 HP. DTI diesel engines will be available between1.7-litres (75 HP) and a 125-HP 2.2-litre unit. Although material and built-quality are said to be largely improved, Opel wants to offer the new Astra for just below the price of a Golf. The estate version will be launched only a little later, with the Zafira MPV following in 2006.
