Vectra Estate

This is exclusive footage of the new Vauxhall Vectra estate and also successor of the Omega estate. It is therefore much bigger than the Vectra saloon and shares the wheelbase - plus 13 centimetres over the Vectra saloon - with the Signum estate-MPV crossover.

With its long and high roofline, the design of the car mimics that of the Mazda 6 and Honda Accord estates in order to maximise practicality and cabin space. It is said that the new Vectra estate will offer more load-space than the Omega estate and that engineers used the Mercedes E-class as a benchmark for assessing luggage area.

Flexibility is further improved by a seating system following the principles of the FlexSpace set-up due to debut in the Meriva and soon on offer for the revised Zafira, including the 40:20:40 split seatback that has just been announced for the 2003 Zafira model range.

Like some of its competitors - the CitroΫn C5 and Rover 75 Tourer - the Vectra estate will feature a split rear tailgate which allows opening the rear window separately from the steel door.

The huge estate will make its debut in summer 2003 but won't be available until five months after the introduction of the Signum - making October 2003 the earliest time to see the car on the road. Price-tag is likely to carry a 1,500 Euros premium over the Vectra saloon.

A wide choice of engines from the standard Vectra is expected, and a new line-up of diesel engines. Common-rail engines, developed with Fiat, are expected to be 2.0 and 2.4 litres in capacity and will come with new six-speed gearboxes.
