A-Class

Mercedes has big plans for its smallest car. The firm is pressing ahead with several projects that revolve around the future fortunes of the A-Class.

Responding to Audi's intelligently designed A2, a dramatic rethink will see the line-up divide into two separate ranges. With the Smart soon to be joined by a four-seat variant and Chrysler to build a VW-Golf rival for Europe, the A-Class is literally being forced to grow up.

Our exclusive footage shows the look of Mercedes' all-new replacement, not due in showrooms until 2004. Complementing the latest family nose is sharper styling to give the A-Class a more mature image.

According to information leaked from Mercedes, this will be offered as two models: an A-Class and B-Class. Both utilise the same platform and drivetrain technology as today's model, but the former will be stretched by 150 mm, the latter by 250 mm. The move aims to answer criticisms from owners and potential customers who claim a stretched chassis is needed to boost accommodation. The 2004 A-Class will be priced well below the B-Class, with equipment and engine choices reflecting this. Both will enjoy revised suspension and a lower centre of gravity. Further revisions include an increase in capacity for the oil-burning CDI-engine from 1.7 to 2.0 litres.
