Although it is a full four-door, the coupé is distanced from the E-class saloon - which provides 85 per cent of its componentry - by a luxurious interior and sharper suspension with which it will tackle the new BMW 6-Series head-on.
The coupé signifies Mercedes' belief that buyers want more stylish and individual models, inspired by Brit rival Jaguar's current range. It is undecided on a name for the new car, which will slot in between the CLK and CL. Current favourite is CLS.
Engines will range from a 215-HP 3.2 V6 through 5.0 V8 to a 493-HP supercharged 5.4 V8. No diesel version has been confirmed, but both six-and eight-cylinder diesels will fit. Inside, the four individual seats are set low to ensure decent headroom in spite of the sweeping roofline. Each features electric adjustment climate control and a built-in massage function.
