Mercedes C-Class

Gotcha! Underneath this extraordinary disguise hides Mercedes' best-kept secret, the successor of their top-seller: the all-new C-Class, due for launch at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. Even though security was very tight when the car was unloaded from a truck in northern Sweden the other day and during the following stop at a nearby petrol station, we got the first pictures of the new midsize sedan in beautiful sunlight.

While dimensions of the new C won't change much compared to the current model, the design of the car will be radically different from that of today's model: out go the double round headlights, in come rectangular units in the style of the new B- and S-class. Like the latter, the new C-Class will mimic the design of the Maybach's rear, including a higher boot lid and the unique taillight design.

Added to the usual range of saloon, estate, coupé and cabrio (both CLK) and the C-Class Sportcoupé will be a new variant - inspired by the great success of the bigger CLS. But different from its bigger brother, this CLC won't be a coupé-like four-door sedan but a five-door estate, yet with a very sloping roofline to create a coupé-like overall look.

Added to the aluminium chassis and the seven-speed automatic transmission will be the new V6 petrol and diesel powerplants. Direct-injecting V6s and V8s with 3.0, 3.5 and 4.5 litres will be available from the start, too.
