The diesel-electric VW Cross Coupe has made its debut at Geneva

A new plug-in diesel hybrid version of the Volkswagen Cross Coupe Concept is starring at the Geneva Motor Show.

Details are scarce, but the company has revealed that its Range Rover Evoque rival will be powered by a combination of a turbodiesel and two electric motors.

The car is no slouch: with a total of 302bhp, it should sprint from 0-60mph in less than seven seconds and hit 137mph. Plus, VW claims the hybrid Cross Coupe returns an amazing 157mpg and emits only 46g/km of CO2.

Expect more details on the new Cross Coupe when it is unveiled at an exclusive preview event on Monday night.

Is it me or does this concept car look remarkably like the Audi Steppenwolf Concept car from about 10 years ago? The steppenwulf looked like a jacked up Mk1 AudiTT and was 'apparently' meant to highlight the design direction on the Mk2 Audi A3!

As usual, all the work went into designing the grille, lights and wheels.....then they completely forgot about designing the rest of the car.

I wonder what the skoda, seat and Audi versions will look like......pop your finger over the VW badge on the photos and hey presto!

It never ceases to amaze and annoy me when I read the moronic comments of some of the idiots that are allowed to use this site. Please AE delete these idiots ..... irrespective of what brand of car you 'prefer' because it has a 'go faster' image or bs marketing diatribe that you subscribe to: ala 'bla bla driving dynamics' etc. , what really counts today is how these cars perform in the 'real' world. Any car that can deliver 302 bhp, sub 7 sec. 0 - 60 mph, top 137 mph and return 157mpg while emitting only 46g/km of CO2. deserves serious recognition for technological brilliance. So why don't all the 'spotty faced' retard loser grow up and go play on some 'reality loser' website!!

Mad_dog it seems you missed the word 'concept' in the article. There is nothing to suggest VW can achieve these claims.
What is tangible however is the styling, which I am entitled to express my opinion over. And in my opinion it's poor, dull and lacking imagination.
You can climb down from your soap box now that you have had a fine old rant about some figures that VW have guesstimated.

NB: I am probably older than you...but less angry

Looks like a VW designer hovered over the drawing board and made a big turd on it, heres the result...

westfield14 ... No, I didn't miss 'concept' however if you are really as old as you intimate (btw, I am far from being a teenager myself) you will know that 'concept' in German automotive technological innovation means 'coming soon'. Look at history. Look at the VW/Audi group patents registered in the past 10 years! Look at what Mazda have done with their Skyactiv engine technology, oh sorry I forgot ... you are only interested in what it looks like !! Your'e whole gripe is that VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda all look alike. What about Toyota/Subaru .. Toyota/Citroen/Peugeot ... Ford, BMW ... all these have either collaborated in joint developements of sameness or have immediately identifiable 'family' faces/design language. You should have noticed that I made no reference to your glib facile comments about styling ... the basis of my comment is that you and your ilk are so focused 'on what it looks like' rather than the technical apsects of the car that the brilliance of the engineering developement is lost in the cloud of 'fashionista' bitching you and your like spew.

Mad dog i'm with you on this. Its technically brilliant. I also think it looks great. If we can get anywhere near that mpg and performance we should all be driving them and at the same time solving global warming. Obviously i use the term 'global' loosely as apparently it doesn't seem to affect China and India and the like who are allowed to emit as much CO2 as they like while the rest of us are made feel guilty about using our cars. The only problem i can see is that it will cost a fortune to buy. But hey, the man has got to keep us driving normal petrol or diesel cars for a bit longer to exploit us for all the tax he can. By the time this car and those like it are affordable we'll all be paying £20 a gallon.

so just what current VAG Group vehicle is delivering these pie in the sky figures that have absolutely no foundation, truth or proof in them whatsoever?? 'real world' figures???? you have to be taking the pi-s? seems to me that morons believe morons...or would that be idiots?

Mad_dog...read Brendan's point......

VW do not innovate at all. They have simply made these figures up to keep up with the competition. The Japanese have hybrid technology all sown up, and should they resort to applying the treatment to a diesel engine, then could possibly achieve figures approaching 100mpg. I think the French will get there first however.

So when VW release this concept, with the same old tdi lump with an electric motor or two....mad_dog can run out and buy it, as he seems to be vags perfect customer....doesn't care what the car looks like, nor does he bother that every other vag car looks the same but costs less, and that he could have bought a more reliable car from Japan.

This strange obsession with vag vehicles really has me baffled....why not try to be different, don't be a sheep.

Hmm, the long knives are out on here, ha ha. Go for it....carve each other up, see if I care, but WTF is it with all the double postings??
And now........VW, put your left hand on your right ear, and your right hand on your left ear, and pull your head out of your a**e [fundamental orifice] !! This vehicle, whatever else it is, is NOT a coupe. IT HAS FOUR DOORS. Notice another German Co effing, not with german, but the English language. And regurgitated by this online mag. SHAME. The vehicle here looks remarkably like no more than a station wagon [of yore] on big wheels and big springs. Hey fellas, no one has twigged to the possibility that the fanciful/achievable quoted economy/emissions figures are to fool the Brussels bureaucrats and kick in the guts downwards their CAFE figures, to cover the gargantuan gas-guzzlers in the Group, starting with the Toe-rag, the Aye-canne, sundry 911's, the Q7, all Bentleys, all Lambos. And to have a 'taste' moment.....if they wanted it to compete with the Evoque they missed. This car is miss dumpy.

So VW have invented something that produces more power from the engine than there is energy in the fuel that it uses contains. Brilliant I hope they've put a patent on the technology as the rest of the car is the usual VW bilge which probably needs an extra "off road" package to crawl over a curb.

Yes. I agree.

Let these fabulous and successful critics try to design a car; we'll even release them from the thousands of safety and technical requirements that must be integrated into any new commercial automobile.
