The latest VW Golf is already one of the best cars you can buy, with its combination of style, quality, practicality, efficiency and driver appeal. But the new eco-tuned BlueMotion model takes the efficiency a step further.

It promises to match the fuel consumption of the best superminis, with an incredible figure of 88.3mpg. That will mean a range of nearly 1,000 miles on a single tank of diesel. Add 85/gkm CO2 emissions – which mean buyers won’t have to pay anything in road tax – and you have one of the cheapest cars to run.

The latest Golf BlueMotion comes as a three or five-door car, and the interior matches supreme quality with decent kit. A five-inch touchscreen is standard, with an eight-inch display optional, and while other equipment could be more generous, options prices aren’t too steep. Safety kit like autobrake and lane departure warning is worth considering, although ESP and an array of airbags are standard.

The Golf has plenty of space, and with a much larger boot size than a Ford Focus, at 380 litres. Competitive insurance group ratings and variable service intervals round off a class-leading package.

But lets be honest... it wont do that will it!

The renault you featured as second has lower co2 and the same mpg... Funny how VW crept into first? :)

But it's French and a Renault....enough said?!
