The VW Golf SE 1.4 TSi with 7 speed DSG has to be one of the best all round cars ever built. The engine/gearbox combination works perfectly together. The performance, ride and handling are all fantastic (I have the ACC as extra and is worth every penny). I came from a diesel to this car but I am still getting a fantastic mpg - I have covered over 18,000 miles and the average return is 42.5mpg. I chose this car specifically as it was a company car and so the tax benefit in kind had to be low - it only costs me a very low £106 a month (40% tax bracket) even though I have loaded the car with extras e.g. satnav to increase the OTR price from £17.3k to £21.4k. It simply is the best all round car package I have ever had - and that comes from someone who has had 24 cars in his lifetime!!

Golf Mark IV GT Sport 140 petrol - FABULOUS!!! As I expected from VW incredibly high build quality, especially in the cab. Everything is as it should be, all the controls are easy to reach and easy to read. The little TSI engine really takes people by surprise. I'm a response driver for emergency services and I've driven a few powerful cars with bigger engines and bhp -The golf is almost as quick due to light engine, twin charging system. Its great fun and handles very nicely. I love it and would very much recommend it

It may be old but it goes well and I am always confident of it starting even in cold weather. I am always amazed at how well this dear old car keeps going. I am very grateful to it. I have my car checked at the garage regularly because of its age. I have found a really good mechanic recommended by a friend. he doesn't charge over the odds and is always excellent. as for petrol, I bite the bullet there and pay whatever I have to in order to keep going to work.

The car has high mileage and apart from a steering rack seal blowing 18 months ago at about 150,000 miles I've had no problems. servicing is reasonable and I've only had to spend out on general wear and tear items I.e brakes tyres and a few bushes. car still has original clutch and battery after 174,000 miles. Parts wise prices are reasonable, I'm a mechanic so labour costs are don't come into it, fuel wise it is pretty good depending on driving conditions.

It's a MK4 Golf GTI. I haven't had any major problems in the last 3 years other than replacing bushes and brushes and standard servicing and MOT + tyres etc
The bushes and brushes and decent tyres make the handling extremely comfortable and I have also had the bodywork coated to protect it against stone chips etc
My only gripe would be the cost of deslership work. I found an ex VW mechanic who is half the price for any work and the costs are reasonable

The Golf has a lovely ride, is very comfortable and is very quiet particularly on the motorway. Handling is very good and performance is OK (110Bhp TDI model). It is also very economical in its use of diesel. Only 2 niggles :- 1) the handbrake is very heavy to use and is situated on the far side of the centre console meaning that it is more awkward to pull up (particularly for my wif) 2) the doors while being well built ar very stiff & heavy to open.

Mk2 golf are classic gems in my opinion, although they have their issues, they are sturdy, strong, very long lasting and very capable. It is one of those cars that you actually have to drive - nothing is assisted or controled. The driver has to really work to handle them . I have always felt safe driving mine as I know how much stronger they are compared to most modern cars. Finally I'll always love that timeless classic look

It's never failed to start. the only problem we had was approximately two years after purchase the brake warning light came on. the aa got us home then to the garage. it was a broken wire. Fuel is for ever rising. I used to fill up for ł50 when I first got it now its more ł60. tax is dear. peter cooper are very expensive this year I took car to a private garage got my mot and service inc brakes for half price !

Great car. My first diesel and love the economy and great performance on Motorways. Servicing and repairs are very expensive for this class of car. The dealer I bought the car from had atrocious after sales service and was totally unwilling to help me after the car was purchased. Have had work done by another dealer who was courteous and efficient though still expensive.

My GTI has been fantastic and a joy to own. Its not the most economical car, but then given the performance I get out of it, I dont think its too bad. There have only been two problems that it has had to go back to the dealership for. One was the A/C and the other a valve problem, which was quickly rectified. Overall the car has been great and is a definite head turner.

my Golf GTI has given me more fun than my subaru ever did. Its great to drive ,nippy and its got go kart handling( in the good sense ) I would say its more fun than my mk1 GTI I used to own and thats saying something.
All in all its every thing you need in a hot hatch.
Bad point is vw's after care and thats why we now use a VW/Audi specialist ( Kim Collins at QST )

Good car for age fuel efficiency is starting to drop within the last 6 months bodywork still in good condition despite age. Would buy another VW golf but perfer the weight of the MK1 golf to the MK2. also mine is the 1.4 engine which is a bit of a dog and not great with the weight of the car so a bigger engine needed.

Have had a few electrical issues with the car. the locking mechanisms fail and so the doors either don't lock or don't unlock.also had the electronic stability control unit failed, which was eventually replaced when the unit price dropped. Not bad running costs. diesel not so efficient sitting in traffic.

Well built and with fine attention to detail; subtle elements of delight and thrill. GTi engine combined with DSG gearbox is a delight and the acceleration and braking excellent. It is understated, which is an advantage, but effortless to drive; entertaining on the road and a pleasure to own.

This car has ticked more boxes than any other car I have owned.
As it is the 1.9 PD 150 diesel version, I have enjoyed performance and economy. I have also been fortunate in having (as yet) no major problems. The suspension problem was undoubtedly a result of speed bumps in the area i live.

The GT TDI is a fantastic all-rounder. Economic when you want it to be and with 5 doors is really versatile. It has decent performance too, and is enjoyable to drive on B-roads as well as being an effective motorway mile-muncher. Annoying and expensive glitches aside, a great car to own.

A quality manufacturer whose build quality on a MK 4 Golf is everything the manuafacturers claim, except for the handling which lets it down. However I still remain happy with the car, and it always brings a smile on my face on long journey's, and the cabin is a pure delight to be in.

Brilliant combination of good looking comfortable quiet effortless performance coupled with excellent ecconomy and a fair degree of fun handling. A sporting family package hard to beat as long as space isn't the prime factor in choice of car. Would definitely buy another.

No major issues, just lots of small ones. for example, in the past 3 years: leaking fuel tank, electric windows that drop and smash, impossibly hard to locate short circuit leading to broken brake lights. All the jobs have cost more than I would have thought.

The GT TSI 170 is an extraordinary car because it delivers very strong performance as well as economy- I regularly achieve 45 mpg and yet it has the power of a V6! The best Golf for all round capabilities - and I have owned 6 others in the past 15 years!

I love my car, its got amazing performance for a 1.4 yet amazing economy for 140ps engine! Can be remapped to 200ps so can keep up with a GTI yet I still get 50mpg! Amazing handling and comfort, I love the interior quality and styling.

Generally very good when it all works but it is the silly things that let it down - window winders, rattles, corroding brake discs, rattly suspension, etc, all basic things that they should be able to get right first time these days.

Very good the Golf Fourmotion drive has been wonderful, especially in inclement weather. Tyre wear is better than expected and although the fuel consumption of the 2.8Ltr engine is a bit high the car has exceeded all my expectations.

The Golf GTI Mk4 is a great car however, I feel that VW really lost the 'GTI' factor after the mk2 so although a good car, to really get that smile on your face you need to mod it in some way...otherwise great!
