Overall Average Rating: 90.3%
Position in the Top 100 cars: 4th

The car of the people lives up to VW’s marketing hype, scoring a raft of solid if unexceptional scores.

What lets it down is its less than impressive reliability record and sub-standard build quality – areas VW would have us believe are core strengths. Let’s hope the MkVI can improve things in these two areas.

Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 16th)

It’s tough for high-volume makers to stay at the top here, yet VW has climbed one place. The MkVI Golf will be included in the 2010 poll, and bosses will hope it will lift the firm further ahead of its rivals.

Overall a great car but some squeaks and rattles I wasn't expecting from a VW have appeared and even after a 2001 Passat you notice the Golf is a cheaper car in terms of extras. Very disappointed with the paint - i.e. soft. It's been in the paint shop 3 times this year and need a 4 th visit again. Just minor scrapes from jackets, shopping bags etc make it look like it's been uncared for, but I suppose it's the same with all water based paints now. I've given up trying to look after the body work now. I haven't hit the service interval yet but in the 11k travelled it's been an economical and overall restored my enjoyment in driving again. I often just 'go for a drive' in the evening as it's great fun on a/b roads and the 1.4 TSI single charged engine is a peach.

Cost: 5/5
06-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

I like the car but picked the wrong engine size so am frustrated with 1.6 as it lacks power for acceleration. I also found that in order to ensure a better performance I have to use the high grade unleaded petrol which is more expensive. I should have gone for a GTI with at least 1.8 to make this a better ride. Other than that is is a smooth ride and good little car. I would have liked the option not to have the bucket (sport) seats.

Excellent. The issue was a software problem that an upgrade fixed quickly. i've got a 1.4 TSI SE with DSG gearbox. It's much more responsive than I imagined and much more frugal. It drives very smoothly, changes up imperceptibly and so gets great consumption (i average 44mpg and have got 50+ on a run). Also as quite as a Lexus. Am well impressed as i've never been a great fan of golfs but love this car, and it is fun for a family hatch

I've had a 3 series BMW estate (new model) and a Volvo C30 prior to this, I wish I'd gone for the Golf sooner. The best compromise between the above two , very well built (good as BMW), understated as opposed to daring styling and 49 MPG from the 2.0 TDI. It's a bit noisy at start up and if you dont have the tyre pressure just right then there's a bit of road noise in the cabin, but this is a classy car.

The bad points of my Golf mark V:

1: There can be a few rattles from the dash board
2: The std radio / CD is far too basic
3: The underdash heater is aimed at my knees - it should be aimed at my feet.
4: front tyre wear is not good.

That's it !!!!! No more complaints. Everything else I'm perfectly happy with and would have no hesitation in running this car for another 3 years.

Golf GTi Edition 30 with DSG and all the toys I wanted. Bought through broker (Lloyds TSB) as I couldn't get any main dealers to play direct. Absolutely belting car. It's more than happy to tootle around town, but it's a riot out in the country. And it's got five seats and a decent boot! Without doubt the best car I've ever had.

Cost: 5/5

This survey could be misleading, the car i have rated is a Golf GTI so you would expect the economy to be lower than say what someone would rate a diesel and performance to be rated higher than other models. So to sum up the GTI variant i would recommend it to anyone, great performance without breaking the bank.

Cost: 3/5
58-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

good overall performance for a car in its class. Comfort ride, strong performance and excellent build quality (its doesn't feel plastic like some other cars you drive). The only issue is fuel economy which is average although that may have something to do with the way I drive it too!

Cost: 3/5
05-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

The car has more than lived up to my expectations.I never buy the same car twice but would almost make an exception in this case. The only real improvement would be the addition of 4wd.Obviously the Golf R deals with this, but £30K for a Golf?A bridge too far I think.

Cost: 5/5
03-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

An excellent all rounder with a good balance between power and economy from this 150 bhp model.
The Golf handles well in the bends, however is a relaxed cruiser on the motorway.
Discreet whilst making progress, but would not look out of place outside a 5 star hotel.

Cost: 5/5
57-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

I think the car is very good. Have been let down by dealer with an issue with the Sat-Nav which has never been resolved and I've always found the level of service in their dealerships to be a bit on the tardy side. I expected a bit more from VW.

Cost: 2/5

A good all-rounder but expensive to run. VW DON'T SAY ANYWHERE THAT THE TSI ENGINES MUST HAVE EXPENSIVE SUPER UNLEADED TO RUN IN THE UK.
Servicing is expensive (even my Crossfire was cheaper) - VW charge £190 for an oil change!!!

Cost: 2/5

LOVE THE CAR, GOOD LOOKS, ECONOMIC, JUST UNLUCKY WITH THIS ONE HAVING TO HAVE NEW GEARBOX JUST AFTER PURCHASING, BUT IT IS OUR 4TH GOLF AND THE ONLY ONE TO HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, WILL DEFINATELY BUY A GOLF IN THE FUTURE

1.6 diesel seems to rely on the turbo too much it is easy to stall and is under powered at low revs and will not reach claimed MPG of 62 its more like 53. Would have same model again but never the 1.6 diesel.

Cost: 3/5
54-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

A little more expensive then most similar models, for example from Ford or Vauxhall - but the quality is superb, the car drives well, it still looks respectable and it has retained money well.

The Golf has the big car feel but in a small package. From being a SAAB sportswagon driver before I haven't noticed the difference in the drive and that's very posiitive for the Golf.
