Overall a great car but some squeaks and rattles I wasn't expecting from a VW have appeared and even after a 2001 Passat you notice the Golf is a cheaper car in terms of extras. Very disappointed with the paint - i.e. soft. It's been in the paint shop 3 times this year and need a 4 th visit again. Just minor scrapes from jackets, shopping bags etc make it look like it's been uncared for, but I suppose it's the same with all water based paints now. I've given up trying to look after the body work now. I haven't hit the service interval yet but in the 11k travelled it's been an economical and overall restored my enjoyment in driving again. I often just 'go for a drive' in the evening as it's great fun on a/b roads and the 1.4 TSI single charged engine is a peach.

Has never left me stranded, but on m any occasions have had worries of reaching destination. shoddy build quality, squeaks, rattles, much much worse than that of british leylands dark days. Mpg is a joke; this is the 1.6 diesel, granted not the bluemotion. I get worse economy than my old 2.0 diesel passat. my driving style and use hasn't changed, it has to be the woeful lack of power from the gruff diesel that requires running at high revs to get anywhere.servicing costs are plain stupid; this is a mass produced 1.6 diesel family car, not james bonds aston!

Cost: 1/5
2011-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

My third vw golf, mk 4 no problem, mk 5 defective fuel pump which took some getting sorted but was done under warranty, this model mk 6 so far been okay so I give it 5. Fuel wise the diesel model not much more expensive that petrol version plus road tax also, I;m happy with mpg as well. took fixed priced servicing ł299 for 3 years. as with mk 5 the 4 year service with cambelt/waterpump is expesive so this will be the same no doubt therefore may keep mk 6 longer. aircon was done on recent service priced at ł79 so that cost has risen.

06-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

I like the car but picked the wrong engine size so am frustrated with 1.6 as it lacks power for acceleration. I also found that in order to ensure a better performance I have to use the high grade unleaded petrol which is more expensive. I should have gone for a GTI with at least 1.8 to make this a better ride. Other than that is is a smooth ride and good little car. I would have liked the option not to have the bucket (sport) seats.

09-reg Petrol, Owner for Less than a year

Excellent. The issue was a software problem that an upgrade fixed quickly. i've got a 1.4 TSI SE with DSG gearbox. It's much more responsive than I imagined and much more frugal. It drives very smoothly, changes up imperceptibly and so gets great consumption (i average 44mpg and have got 50+ on a run). Also as quite as a Lexus. Am well impressed as i've never been a great fan of golfs but love this car, and it is fun for a family hatch

Cost: 5/5
1998-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Solid build quality, the interior has no issues at all, the usual perishables have had to be replaced along with some rust. but nothing out of the ordinary at all. It is a turbo petrol car, and it is great fun to drive fast, therefore fuel is not cheap. also the tax is expensive due to its older less eco friendly engine. however the parts are easy to find and not too expensive due to the huge popularity of the car.

08-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

I've had a 3 series BMW estate (new model) and a Volvo C30 prior to this, I wish I'd gone for the Golf sooner. The best compromise between the above two , very well built (good as BMW), understated as opposed to daring styling and 49 MPG from the 2.0 TDI. It's a bit noisy at start up and if you dont have the tyre pressure just right then there's a bit of road noise in the cabin, but this is a classy car.

07-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The bad points of my Golf mark V:

1: There can be a few rattles from the dash board
2: The std radio / CD is far too basic
3: The underdash heater is aimed at my knees - it should be aimed at my feet.
4: front tyre wear is not good.

That's it !!!!! No more complaints. Everything else I'm perfectly happy with and would have no hesitation in running this car for another 3 years.

2003-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

Considering the cars age and mileage, I have not had (touch wood) any mechanical breakdowns. it starts on the button and runs smoothly. Being a german car it is more cost than other makes but is cheaper than my last car, a bmw m3! it is a gas guzzler but I don't do many miles to warrant a diesel and I prefer the silky smoothness of the v6 to be honest.

Cost: 4/5
08-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Golf GTi Edition 30 with DSG and all the toys I wanted. Bought through broker (Lloyds TSB) as I couldn't get any main dealers to play direct. Absolutely belting car. It's more than happy to tootle around town, but it's a riot out in the country. And it's got five seats and a decent boot! Without doubt the best car I've ever had.

Cost: 5/5
2010-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The car has settled into been extremly reliable. We are amazed at the mpg on a long run. driven at legal speeds it usually approaches the high seventies on a long run infact on a warm calm day it has often started to creep into the eighties. the servicing costs are too high but we have not had any other costs to date.

Cost: 5/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

This is the 5th golf we've had. they do have 'niggles' but all sorted under warranty. never anything major. 18" wheels mean expensive tyres. diesel gets better mpg but the increase in diesel costs kind of cancels it out. servicing not particularily cheap. parts not bad but hourly rates at vw higher than average.

Cost: 3/5
57-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

This survey could be misleading, the car i have rated is a Golf GTI so you would expect the economy to be lower than say what someone would rate a diesel and performance to be rated higher than other models. So to sum up the GTI variant i would recommend it to anyone, great performance without breaking the bank.

Cost: 3/5
2004-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

There have been a few issues with the airbag light coming twice and recently a radiator leak. High mileage between services (20,000 miles) but servicing is expensive when due. also tyres/brakes expensive and required regularly (approx 40,000 miles) and the cambelt is expensive at ł400+ to replace.

Cost: 3/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

The car has been very reliable, as I would expect from a low mileage modern car! When I drive the car sensibly, I get excellent mpg, less so when I drive spiritedly. the mpg has improved noticeably with more miles on the clock. service spare prices are comparable to halfords and the like.

Cost: 5/5
58-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

good overall performance for a car in its class. Comfort ride, strong performance and excellent build quality (its doesn't feel plastic like some other cars you drive). The only issue is fuel economy which is average although that may have something to do with the way I drive it too!

Cost: 3/5
2002-reg Diesel, Owner for more than 5 years

I've had my volkswagon golf from new and it's never let us down, we have had it 10 years and still going nicely. As in this climate everyone is feeling the pinch, with petrol diesel up diesel especially. my volkswagon comes in to it's own on long journeys very economical.

Cost: 4/5
2008-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

No major faults. some niggly little parts needed but noting that stopped me from being able to use it. It's a special edition golf gti. it was never going to win awards for mpg. servicing is a little on the pricey side but worth while keeping up to date from the dealer.

Cost: 2/5
05-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

The car has more than lived up to my expectations.I never buy the same car twice but would almost make an exception in this case. The only real improvement would be the addition of 4wd.Obviously the Golf R deals with this, but £30K for a Golf?A bridge too far I think.

Cost: 5/5
03-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

An excellent all rounder with a good balance between power and economy from this 150 bhp model.
The Golf handles well in the bends, however is a relaxed cruiser on the motorway.
Discreet whilst making progress, but would not look out of place outside a 5 star hotel.

Cost: 5/5
2003-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Very reliable car has never let me down but have had issues with engine warning light comeing on and electronic pedal control warning light activating for no reason. Fuel economy quite pleased with for a 1.6 but spare parts can be expensive but easy to find.

Cost: 3/5

Electrical issues as car is getting older - nothing major just annoying things like temperamental auto lights, rear wiper and central locking . Cheap at specialist independant garages. no complaints. rarely any maintenance outside service schedule.

Cost: 4/5

I think the car is very good. Have been let down by dealer with an issue with the Sat-Nav which has never been resolved and I've always found the level of service in their dealerships to be a bit on the tardy side. I expected a bit more from VW.

Cost: 2/5

The cruise control stalk broke but other than that it has been spot on, no other faults. A 200bhp turbo charged hot hatch is not going to be the most economical car in the world! I wish you could get the performance but with much better economy!

It is very reliable. however, it's currently having some issues starting - suspected starter motor. Previously owned saxo, parts were much cheaper as was fuel but then car was crap (french) and engine was smaller. swings and roundabouts.

A good all-rounder but expensive to run. VW DON'T SAY ANYWHERE THAT THE TSI ENGINES MUST HAVE EXPENSIVE SUPER UNLEADED TO RUN IN THE UK.
Servicing is expensive (even my Crossfire was cheaper) - VW charge £190 for an oil change!!!

1.6 diesel seems to rely on the turbo too much it is easy to stall and is under powered at low revs and will not reach claimed MPG of 62 its more like 53. Would have same model again but never the 1.6 diesel.

Cost: 3/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Would have scored 5 as its never broken down, but one of the brake pad sensors fell of and had to be taken in to be replaced. Surprisingly efficient given that I do not exactly drive in an economical manner.

Cost: 5/5
2008-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Mechanically the golf gti is very reliable, however the wheels had corroded very quickly and were replaced under warranty. Fuel economy could be better and I am wary of oil consumption being rather high too.

Cost: 2/5
