03-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Expensive to maintain and insure. Not a car for the DIY mechanic. Body style is showing its age despite cosmetic changes. Could have been better if some extras were fitted as standard, like cruise control. I dislike the drive-by-wire option and there is a certain amount of turbo lag. Seats are comfortable but the front seatbelt stalks are too low and are difficult for older, and large, people to locate. Have found that the automatic version appears to have its pedals too close together as braking and acceleration sometimes results in pressing both pedals (I have not experienced this on other cars). Pity the Passat was never produced in a hatchback version. Saloon would benefit from a rear screen wash/wipe system.

An excellent car. Despite being 7 years old it is still good to look at. An excellent motorway cruiser, easy to drive and economical. The 1.8 Petrol Turbo will give 40mpg plus if driven sensibly and if you really have to move just press the pedal. Safety was proven by my first Passat writen off in a head on smash (I was on the right side of the road!) I was bruised and battered but otherwise OK. The car has been regularly serviced and cam belt changed but everthing else is original. However the tyres are getting near the legal limit in tread depth and are somewhat past it on time.

57-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Electronic parking brake, even after the garage had checked it is so much worse than I can acheive with a manual handbrake - it lurches (ie sticks on) sometimes when taking off from still, and it clamps full on sometimes when you're rolling along!! Rubbish - get rid of it, pls! Clutch makes an unsophisticated sound when engaging at standstill and judders, even after a replacement at 3,000miles. The economy is not as good as my old 1.8T despite what the brochure says......

S-reg Diesel, Owner for More than 5 years

Passat 1.9 Tdi Estate 1998 S Reg absolutely the best car I have ever owned, 209,000 + miles been all over Europe in it always delivered average of around 55/57 to gallon, never failed, Main Dealer servicing proved too expensive latterly, so went to local independent specialist, who serviced the vehicle well. The last trip in it was to Local VW dealers, and the car was used as scrappage for £4250 against a new Passat Bluemotion 2.0l Estate. Pity, I loved that car!!!

2002-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

Amazing quality for a 10years old car. still drives like new. very reliable. quiet, economical yet swift. spacious boot. must be volkswagen. Due to living in a jersey( small island) it can be considered as town driving as max speed is 40mph therefore running cost are bit higher but very good still. returning around 45mpg on motorway run, 22mpg around town. averaging 32mpg.

Cost: 4/5
X-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Overall speaking, it's a good brand; stylish design, strong body, built with high quality materials, good suspension. However, the 1.6 liters engine has a weak performance given the body weight and size (1.6 cc engines are imported for Custom Duties reasons).
One major disadvantage is that the VW Agency charges very high expenses for services rendered and spare parts.

Cost: 3/5
Y-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

VW Passat 130bhp, it's the old model, better than the newer car in my opinion and that of the VW mechanics, that's why I haven't replaced it. I have done 140,000 miles in this car (total now 180,000) and it is only just beginning to show signs of age. Has cost me 11p a mile to run including all bills and depreciation but excluding fuel, I don't think that's bad!

Cost: 5/5
07-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The VW Passat Estate 2.0TDI DSG is probably one of the best all round cars you could buy. It drives fantastically and hauls everything you could want it too including 3 baby seats across the back seat and trust me, there are not many cars that can boast that. We had a Touareg before this and whilst it was a great car, running costs and essentially RV were poor.

Cost: 5/5
2010-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Not let us down, but occasionally fan stays on after ignition is off, accompanied by a burning oil smell. dealer can't find anything wrong. Would be expensive to insure, but for no claims built up... tax went down from previous model, and it is smoother and more economical than previous passat (we had an 05 same model, for around 7 years).

Cost: 4/5
2006-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Excellent, only let me down once when the trailer module failed due to water ingress and discharged the battery. easy, cheap fix with no long term damage. Parts prices good as I get them trade and it doesn't need that many. fuel consumption is not that great, but it is a 200bhp car (compared with similar powered sierra cosworths...).

Cost: 4/5
2006-reg Diesel, Owner for more than 5 years

Mostly ok, but some issues with electrics and fuel injection(mostly sorted under warranty). Mpg very good for such a large car with older tech engine. spares pricy, but haven't really needed much outside of warranty. good with tyres, which are not too pricy as not ultra low profile etc.

Cost: 4/5
1997-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

This car has only done 75000 miles from new and is kept in a pristine condition. parts replaced have been due to wear only with no part failures. I also have an mgf. Ins ł180, spares average plenty around. suspension and steering is slightly complicated and expensive on this model.

Cost: 4/5
09-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

It's the best car I've ever had. It does everything I need it to do in an efficient manner with no fuss. It's fast, spacious, economical, comfortable and reliable. It's a company car but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one privately if the need to own my own car arises.

Cost: 5/5
2006-reg Diesel, Owner for more than 5 years

It has needed:5 x parking sensors2 x radio / cd playersfuel pumpinlet manifold gasketnew injectorsturborear brake cylindercylinder headcam followersblock helicoiled for cam belt tensioner. Expensive on fuel and tyres, but thats what you expect with the 4motion.

great performance from turbo petrol engine and dsg gearbox. top spec model has very good interior trim. let down by truely awful fuel economy and niggly little faults such as the passenger door handle failing to work from the outside!

07-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Really pleased with it, bought the car as a change from sports cars when my young family came along, wanst sure at first hence the 2nd hand purchase, but as the car only had 1,000 miles on the clock, was like new. Really impressed.

Cost: 3/5
2006-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

I had the known issue with the epb calilpers failing. same issue known door locks failing. car has never let me down though. Good reliability cheap to service and repair. mpg not great but expected for a high ish power big estate.

Y-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

THE VW PASSAT TDI 130 SE IS PROBABLY THE BEST CAR IVE EVER OWNED AND AT 46 YEARS OLD IVE HAD A FEW CARS IN MY LIFE TIME. BUT THE PASSAT IS THE BEST. WE ALSO OWN A AUDI A4 YES ANOTHER GREAT CAR 200.000 MILES TROUBLE FREE MOTORING.

Cost: 5/5
2006-reg Diesel, Owner for more than 5 years

Apart from replacing the clutch and a few minor things the car has been perfect. Fuel tank takes about ł90 of diesel and fully comp ins is ł166 ,I drive it really economically and I only take it over 60moh on longer journeys.

Cost: 4/5
Other-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

I LOVE IT WILL RUN IT INTO THE GROUND. UNFORTUNATELY DUE TO BEING UNEMPLOYED ITS SORNED THE PAST YEAR. I LOVE IT THOUGH IT DOES 700 MILES TO THE TANK BEST CAR I'VE EVER OWNED JUST WISH I COULD AFFORT TO TAX AND MOT IT.

Cost: 5/5
2005-reg Diesel, Owner for more than 5 years

Turbocharger broke when car only two years old. uses oil more than I would expect. Expensive spares. Excellent pulling power and pick up. holds the road reasonably well and is an excellent motorway cruiser.

Cost: 2/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Excellent until it was 3 yrs old when the turbo to intercooler pipe failed. also egr valve failed. Good mpg, low servicing costs. items such as wiper blades are lower priced at vw dealer than say halfords.

Cost: 4/5
2006-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

The parking break button failed after 60,000 miles. rear window winders snapped off. the drivers door has dropped and clicks loudly when opening and closing. Tyres are very expensive and wear too quickly.

Cost: 3/5
2003-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

Too many engine diagnostic lights that mean nothing of any significance. Car cheap to buy - thirsty for juice - reliable enough (after owning a disastrous renault) so probably all-in-all well balanced.

Cost: 2/5
S-reg Petrol, Owner for Less than a year

A great car, but let down by some issues. However its what i expect from a second hand car. The fixes are not too difficult and relatively easy to fix my self, despite a lack of mechanical knowledge.

06-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

The Passat is described by some as a boring car, but I found it to be an excellent 4/5 seater saloon with good economy and carrying capacity. Particularly pleased with the size of the boot.

Cost: 4/5
Other-reg Petrol, Owner for More than 5 years

Overall speaking, it's good built, stable on the highway, and economy on city and highway driving. The control arms wear frequently. The 1.6 ltr engine is weak on the body size & weight.

Cost: 2/5
2007-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Generally very reliable apart from electronic parking brake. Expensive with tyres; even driving carefully gets through a set of fronts in less than 10,000 miles at ł150 each!

Cost: 3/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Very good until the warranty ended when it needed an egr valve and an turbo intercooler pipe. vw contributed to the bill. Parts from a vw dealer are surprisingly cheap.

Cost: 4/5
2006-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Gearbox broke recently but car has 120000 miles on it. otherwise a good car. Genuine parts and main dealer prices for serviceing are ok. very economical on long drives.

Cost: 3/5
