Volkswagen Passat Running Costs
Overall Average Rating: 84.19%
Position in the Top 100 cars: 70th
In a shock set of results, it seems that owners are fed-up with the reliability of their Passats, so much so that only two models are rated worse.
Drivers aren’t much more impressed with the build. Despite the good ride, this is a very poor result, especially for a VW about to celebrate only its fourth birthday.
Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 16th)
It’s tough for high-volume makers to stay at the top here, yet VW has climbed one place. The MkVI Golf will be included in the 2010 poll, and bosses will hope it will lift the firm further ahead of its rivals.

Expensive to maintain and insure. Not a car for the DIY mechanic. Body style is showing its age despite cosmetic changes. Could have been better if some extras were fitted as standard, like cruise control. I dislike the drive-by-wire option and there is a certain amount of turbo lag. Seats are comfortable but the front seatbelt stalks are too low and are difficult for older, and large, people to locate. Have found that the automatic version appears to have its pedals too close together as braking and acceleration sometimes results in pressing both pedals (I have not experienced this on other cars). Pity the Passat was never produced in a hatchback version. Saloon would benefit from a rear screen wash/wipe system.

An excellent car. Despite being 7 years old it is still good to look at. An excellent motorway cruiser, easy to drive and economical. The 1.8 Petrol Turbo will give 40mpg plus if driven sensibly and if you really have to move just press the pedal. Safety was proven by my first Passat writen off in a head on smash (I was on the right side of the road!) I was bruised and battered but otherwise OK. The car has been regularly serviced and cam belt changed but everthing else is original. However the tyres are getting near the legal limit in tread depth and are somewhat past it on time.

Electronic parking brake, even after the garage had checked it is so much worse than I can acheive with a manual handbrake - it lurches (ie sticks on) sometimes when taking off from still, and it clamps full on sometimes when you're rolling along!! Rubbish - get rid of it, pls! Clutch makes an unsophisticated sound when engaging at standstill and judders, even after a replacement at 3,000miles. The economy is not as good as my old 1.8T despite what the brochure says......

Passat 1.9 Tdi Estate 1998 S Reg absolutely the best car I have ever owned, 209,000 + miles been all over Europe in it always delivered average of around 55/57 to gallon, never failed, Main Dealer servicing proved too expensive latterly, so went to local independent specialist, who serviced the vehicle well. The last trip in it was to Local VW dealers, and the car was used as scrappage for £4250 against a new Passat Bluemotion 2.0l Estate. Pity, I loved that car!!!

Overall speaking, it's a good brand; stylish design, strong body, built with high quality materials, good suspension. However, the 1.6 liters engine has a weak performance given the body weight and size (1.6 cc engines are imported for Custom Duties reasons).
One major disadvantage is that the VW Agency charges very high expenses for services rendered and spare parts.

VW Passat 130bhp, it's the old model, better than the newer car in my opinion and that of the VW mechanics, that's why I haven't replaced it. I have done 140,000 miles in this car (total now 180,000) and it is only just beginning to show signs of age. Has cost me 11p a mile to run including all bills and depreciation but excluding fuel, I don't think that's bad!

The VW Passat Estate 2.0TDI DSG is probably one of the best all round cars you could buy. It drives fantastically and hauls everything you could want it too including 3 baby seats across the back seat and trust me, there are not many cars that can boast that. We had a Touareg before this and whilst it was a great car, running costs and essentially RV were poor.

It's the best car I've ever had. It does everything I need it to do in an efficient manner with no fuss. It's fast, spacious, economical, comfortable and reliable. It's a company car but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one privately if the need to own my own car arises.

Really pleased with it, bought the car as a change from sports cars when my young family came along, wanst sure at first hence the 2nd hand purchase, but as the car only had 1,000 miles on the clock, was like new. Really impressed.

A great car, but let down by some issues. However its what i expect from a second hand car. The fixes are not too difficult and relatively easy to fix my self, despite a lack of mechanical knowledge.

The Passat is described by some as a boring car, but I found it to be an excellent 4/5 seater saloon with good economy and carrying capacity. Particularly pleased with the size of the boot.

Overall speaking, it's good built, stable on the highway, and economy on city and highway driving. The control arms wear frequently. The 1.6 ltr engine is weak on the body size & weight.
