Polestar updates Volvo S60 and V60 with enhanced aero package

The Swedish performance experts have upgraded the aerodynamics on their hot versions of Volvo’s S60 and V60 with carbon fibre add-ons

The BMW M3, Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, Audi RS4, and Mercedes C63 - if you’re in the market for a saloon with giant killing performance, you really are spoilt for choice at the moment. However, your decision may have just got a little harder thanks to Volvo announcing updated Polestar editions of the 2018 S60 and V60 models.

Volvo has announced that there is to be a limited run of 1500 new Polestar cars, of which around 50 will make it to the UK. Of that number, all will be built in V60 guise suggesting that the as yet unannounced prices will be around the £49,665 price of the current Polestar V60. The new cars do not come with any power upgrades, but instead feature reworked aerodynamics forged from the data collected during Cyan Racing’s World Touring Car Championship efforts - Cyan Racing being the motorsport partner of Polestar.

The select few who will be able to get their hands on the keys can expect the cars to come with a 30% increase in downforce. The result of which should improve the handling and high speed stability. The components said to deliver the improved performance, are the new side sills, rear spoiler extension, front splitter, and wing mirror casings, all of which are made from carbon fibre.

But that is not all you get for the money, other areas of the car have received upgrades. Volvo added high-gloss black wheels (which are of course diamond cut) to the exterior, plus new contrasting blue stitching and Polestar embroidering to the interior. There is also a new ‘Bursting Blue Metallic’ colour available to customers, should they feel that way inclined.

Happily, the aerodynamic tweaks have shaved 0.1seconds off the 0-60 time, taking it down to a rapid 4.7 seconds. As with the older Polestar models there are still adjustable Öhlins shock absorbers, four-wheel drive, and huge 371mm brake discs with 6-piston Brembo calipers.

However, despite the liberal use of carbon fibre, the new Polestars have not been on a diet, with increased kerb weights now tipping the scales at 1,753kg (S60) and 1,800kg (V60).

All these changes amount to a vehicle which has more than 250 upgraded components from the standard cars they are derived from, and offer drivers two of the most engaging Volvos money can buy.
