New 2021 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer spied

A new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer MPV has been spotted testing near Arctic Circle which is set to debut in 2021

The next-generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has been spied cold-weather testing, ahead of the new MPV’s expected debut in 2021.

Despite the test mule wearing heavy camouflage, the evolution of the exterior design is clear in some areas. At the front, the grille appears to be more prominent and the headlight signature has changed. Meanwhile, the wing mirrors are now affixed to the doors rather than the window frame as before.

The wheelbase looks slightly longer with shorter overhangs, which could point towards improved cabin space for passengers. Alterations at the rear are harder to pick out, although the obscured taillights seem to have a new design. The tailpipe is also directed downwards, rather than sticking out from the rear bumper.

There’s no word yet on the engine line-up, but as the 2 Series Active Tourer is based on the same underpinnings of the 1 Series hatchback, it could borrow powertrains as well. That would mean three- and four-cylinder petrol units with a variety of power outputs, as well as multiple diesels. An M-badged model looks unlikely, however.

The outgoing car is available as a plug-in hybrid, with a recent update introducing a larger 10kWh battery boosting zero-emissions range to 31 miles. It’s likely that the new car will follow suit, although it’s not clear performance will take another leap forward.

The first-generation 2 Series Active Tourer was introduced in 2014, with more than 31,000 examples sold in the UK since then. It was the first BMW to offer front-wheel drive.
