New 2020 Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid launched with £35k price tag

Citroen unveils plug-in hybrid C5 Aircross, with a combined output of 222bhp and a claimed all-electric range of 31 miles

Citroen has launched a new plug-in hybrid version of the C5 Aircross. Available to order now priced from £35,340, it’s the French brand’s first step towards its aim of electrifying its entire line-up by 2025. First deliveries are expected to arrive in mid-2020.

It’s powered by a 178bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a gearbox-mounted electric motor, which offers a combined output of 222bhp and 320Nm of torque. Citroen claims the system offers economy figures of 166mpg, emissions ratings of just 39g/km of CO2 and an all-electric range of 31 miles.

Like the conventionally powered 2.0-litre PureTech petrol model, the C5 Aircross Hybrid’s engine and electric motor are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. The SUV can reach 84mph on electric power alone and, when plugged into a domestic 7.4kW wall box charger, it’s battery pack will recover a 100 percent charge in less than two hours

Citroen has also fitted the C5 Aircross PHEV with a handful of chassis revisions over the internal combustion-engined model, including a new multi-link rear axle and the brand’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension system, which promises to smooth out all road imperfections ranging from potholes to speed bumps.

The SUV’s cabin is exclusively offered with Citroen’s Advanced Comfort seats, and features the same sliding, folding and reclining rear bench as the combustion-engined variant. However, the addition of a battery pack means the C5 Aircross Hybrid’s boot space has reduced from a maximum of 780 litres to 600 litres.

The Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid also comes with a range of unique equipment which isn’t offered on the conventionally powered model. Additions include Anodised Blue exterior trim, a reworked frameless rear-view mirror and new graphics for the SUV’s 12.3-inch digital instrument binnacle and eight-inch infotainment system.

Buyers also get a free three-year subscription to Citroen’s real-time traffic update system, Apple CarPlay, AndroidAuto and new drive mode selector for the centre console, which adds three new drivetrain settings – “100% electric,” “Hybrid” and “Sport.”
