Mazda MX-5
Mazda MX-5 wins Auto Express New Car Award 2010 for the best roadster.
Why it won...
Sometimes less really is more – and the MX-5 is a prime example. More than two decades after the original first hit the road, the Japanese drop-top is still delivering wind-in-the-hair thrills to buyers on a budget.
Now in its third generation, the Mazda combines sharp looks, engaging rear-wheel-drive handling and attractive prices. Entry-level models get a simple fabric roof, while spending a little extra cash buys you the versatile folding hard-top version.
The 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol engines provide just enough pace, and are mated to a slick-shifting gearbox. However, it’s the MX-5’s agile and entertaining chassis that shines brightest. And with prices starting at £17,245, it’s not hard to see why the Mazda is the world’s best-selling roadster.

Commended:
BMW Z4
With its excellent folding metal roof and eye-catching lines, the Z4 is the perfect companion for top-down cruising. Adding to the car’s appeal are a classy cabin and gutsy engines. However, relaxed driving dynamics mean it won’t be first choice for keen drivers seeking back-road fun.
Porsche Boxster
Few cars in any class can match the Boxster for pure driving thrills. The beautifully balanced mid-engined model also delivers a cosseting cabin, snug fabric hood and a line-up of tuneful flat-six motors. Even the entry-level 2.9 is all the sports car you could need. Only high prices dim the appeal.
