MG ZS EV given significant update for 2021 with 273 mile range

New 50kWh and 73kWh battery options align with strong exterior redesign for new MG ZS, on sale from November

MG has given the all-electric ZS EV a major facelift, with new styling inside and out, fresh technology and crucially, a new, larger battery pack that unlocks a significant increase in the car’s range.

The updated ZS will go on sale in the UK next month, and while prices here have not been revealed, potential buyers are being invited to register their interest.

Two versions of the updated ZS have been confirmed - a Standard Range model with a 51kWh battery and a Long Range model that has a new 72kWh cell placed under the floor. The new two-model line-up replaces the old ZS EV, which was only available with a 44.5kWh battery and capable of a range of 163 miles under WLTP testing.

The new 51kWh Standard Range model will be capable of 198 miles under the same certification, but will arrive in the UK later than the 72kWh model, being due on sale early in 2022. UK prices have not been announced, but in Europe, this model will cost from €30,990 (£26,370).

The new 72kWh Long Range car sees the ZS step into territory occupied by electric compact SUVs that will wear much higher price tags, such as the new Renault Megane E-Tech Electric. The new battery gives the ZS a range of 273 miles on a full charge. European prices will start from €34,990 (£29,770).

The rapid charging standard for the ZS remains at 76kW, and MG claims that the Long Range model will take 42 minutes to recharge when connected to a CCS charger capable of that power flow or more. In Europe an 11kW three-phase charger will be included as standard, but this has not been confirmed for UK versions of the new ZS, which may stick with 7kW single-phase compatibility for fast and wallbox charging.

Design changes for the new-look ZS include a front end that’s more keeping with the model’s battery-electric drivetrain, and places distance between the electric version and its petrol powered siblings.

The conventional grille has been removed, and the front end is far more streamlined with a stamped pattern in its place. The charging flap is now visible on the car’s front end and no longer hidden beneath the grille. There’s a different design of LED headlights, along with alloy wheels a subtly redesigned rear bumper.

Changes inside include a new infotainment system. Called MG iSmart, the 10.1-inch screen runs new software with updated graphics, and it now offers smartphone connectivity with remote control of key functions such as charging status and climate control. MG has also equipped the ZS EV with fully digital instrumentation and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

UK prices will be confirmed in November, with a trim structure consisting of SE, Trophy and Trophy Connect models available, but equipment levels have not been revealed.

The brand has also given the MG 5 electric estate a facelift, introducing significant exterior design updates and a visually refreshed interior. MG UK issued a larger battery version of the 5 back in the summer and has yet to confirm plans to bring the new-look estate, so it seems unlikely to land in dealerships here until spring 2022 at the earliest.
