New entry-level MG ZS EV launched, dropping price to £27,495

MG has unveiled a Standard Range variant of the ZS EV, which has a smaller battery pack and a maximum range of 198 miles

MG has broadened the line-up of its budget-friendly pure-electric crossover, the ZS EV, by launching a fresh Standard Range variant. The new entry-level model has a starting price of £27,495 including the government’s £1,500 plug-in car grant, which makes it £2,000 less expensive than the cheapest Long Range model.

This new Standard Range specification follows MG’s recent facelift for the ZS EV, which brought sharper styling, new interior technology and some significant changes to the drivetrain, centred around some fresh (and slightly more powerful) battery packs.

So, the Standard Range model features a 51.1kWh battery pack, rather than the 44.5kWh unit found in the pre-facelift model. The upgrade results in a maximum range of 198 miles, which is 35 miles up on the old model. MG also says charging times haven’t been impacted too much, with a 10–80 per cent top-up from a 100kW rapid charger taking 36 minutes.

Strangely, the cheaper Standard Range variant has more power than the Long Range model, which MG says is due to the different operating voltages of the battery packs. The entry-level model has 174bhp, while the range-topping variant produces 154bhp.

The extra poke shows up in the performance figures, too. MG says the Standard Range model will get from 0–60mph in eight seconds flat, while the Long Range variant covers the same sprint in 8.2 seconds. Top speed remains unchanged, though, at 108mph.

As the Long Range model gets a larger 72kWh battery pack, its charge times are slightly slower. It takes 42 minutes to charge from 10–80 percent capacity using a 100kW rapid charger, and more than 10 hours to fully recharge using a 7kW wallbox. However, the bigger battery allows for a maximum range of 273 miles.

New 2022 MG ZS EV: prices and specifications

Both the Standard Range and Long Range versions of the MG ZS EV share the same three trim-levels, called SE, Trophy and Trophy Connect. Standard equipment for the base-model includes automatic air-conditioning, LED headlights, a few USB charging ports, keyless entry and a 360-degree parking camera.

As part of the facelift, MG also fitted every ZS EV with a new 10-1-inch infotainment system called MG iSmart. It runs new software with updated graphics, and it now offers smartphone connectivity with remote control of key functions such as charging and climate control.

Other standard equipment includes a digital gauge cluster and adaptive cruise control, along with a new vehicle-to-load function, which allows owners to use the car’s battery pack to power electrical equipment such as power tools.

The ZS EV Trophy is priced from £29,995 with the Standard Range powertrain (which includes the government grant) or £33,495 with the Long Range powertrain (which doesn’t). Additional equipment includes a panoramic glass sunroof, faux-leather upholstery, heated seats, rain-sensing wipers and a wireless smartphone charger.

MG’s flagship Trophy Connect model has a starting price of £30,495 with the Standard Range powertrain and £33,995 with the Long Range powertrain. The biggest upgrade over the Trophy specification is MG’s new connected services, which provides live traffic and weather updates, as well as Amazon Prime support.

Design changes for the new-look ZS include a front end that’s more keeping with the model’s battery-electric drivetrain, and places distance between the electric version and its petrol powered siblings.

The conventional grille has been removed, and the front end is far more streamlined with a stamped pattern in its place. The charging flap is now visible on the car’s front end and no longer hidden beneath the grille. There’s a different design of LED headlights, along with alloy wheels and a subtly redesigned rear bumper.
