Although it’s neither a hot hatch nor a GTi, the Peugeot 405 Mi16 is still more than worthy of its place in our Peugeot Sport road car top 10 – and not only because of the great TV advertisement that literally took our collective breaths away back in the eighties with its Top Gun soundtrack.
Powered by a 1,905cc, 158bhp 16-valve engine, the 405 was a bit of a Q car in a world of plain junior-exec saloons. Its discreet bodykit told those who knew that this was no ordinary 405. When the driver found a worthy road, those traditional Peugeot hot-handling traits shone through with an involving chassis, direct steering and a balance previously unseen in its class.
