Best electric cars for Motability 2024

You don't have to choose between just petrol and diesel cars - the Motability scheme now includes a number of electric models too

As an ever-increasing number of carmakers and drivers begin the transition to electric power, the Motability scheme is following suit and offering more EVs to its customers than ever before. The best electric cars on Motability offer many of the same qualities as their combustion-powered counterparts, but with the added benefits of zero-emissions, lower running costs and a much smoother and quieter driving experience.

There’s lots of variety on the EV market, with models ranging from sports cars to luxury SUVs. Some of the flashier models aren’t available on Motability, but don’t worry as many of the best electric cars to own are.

Best electric cars for Motability 2024

As the UK’s public charging network continues to expand and improve, owning an electric car is becoming easier for more people. So, if you’re ready to make the switch, read on to find the best electric cars on Motability listed below.

Hyundai Kona

The latest Hyundai Kona isn’t just a great electric car, it’s also our 2023 Car of the Year. While the original was a commendable small SUV, it wasn’t quite able to become a class leader. In response to this, Hyundai made the sensible decision to listen carefully to feedback from its customers when designing the latest model. The result is a far more distinctive SUV that offers improvements in just about every key area, including practicality, quality and refinement.

Five people are now able to easily access and comfortably sit in the new Kona, thanks to its slightly larger stature. Once inside, they will have plenty of features at their disposal such as a 12.3-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control and USB-C ports in both the front and rear.

There are currently two batteries available in the Kona: a 48kWh or 65.4kWh unit with claimed maximum ranges of 234 and 319 miles respectively. Naturally, Konas fitted with the smaller battery incur the smaller advance payments, but over 200 miles of range should prove plenty for most people. When you do need to plug in, the Kona’s fast charging capability means you can top up from 10-80 per cent in 41 minutes.

MG4

MG’s rebirth has seen it producing some of the cheapest new cars on the UK market, and the all-electric MG4 family hatchback is one of the brand’s best models yet. It’s another Auto Express award winner, too, as we named the MG4 our 2023 Affordable Electric Car of the Year.

While we have been able to find some evidence of MG’s cost-cutting within the MG4’s interior, the overall presentation is still highly satisfactory and follows a similarly minimalist approach to models from rival brands such as Volkswagen. The exterior is the opposite of minimalist, though, with sharp edges and some very bright colours to help make the MG incredibly easy to find in a crowded car park. Admittedly, the MG4’s angular looks won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but its tall shape and five doors make it easy to access. There’s a decent amount of room for all passengers, too.

Perhaps the best news with the MG4 is that its low cost doesn’t mean a low battery range. Even the smallest 51kWk battery claims up to 218 miles of range, while the largest 64kWh unit boosts this to 281 miles. Both versions are available through Motability.

Citroen e-C4

It’s a hat trick of award winning EVs as the third car on this list is yet another title holder. There’s a slight difference with the Citroen e-C4’s accolade, though, as it was the car’s current owners who named it the Best Car to Own in our 2023 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey. Of course, we’re fond of this all-electric hatchback, too.

Owners praise many of the e-C4’s qualities including reliability, safety, driving pleasure, running costs and, of course, the comfortable seats and smooth ride quality – two Citroen specialities. When we spent over six months living with the e-C4 as part of our long-term test fleet, we found it coped well with the demands of day-to-day family use, taking on plenty of people and cargo with ease. We also believe that it is one of the more conventional-feeling EVs on the current market, which should prove rather reassuring for those looking to switch over from fossil fuels for the first time.

The class-leading level of comfort does come at the cost of engagement, so if you’re after an entertaining driving experience then this isn’t the EV for you. However, if you want a practical and straightforward car that should prove easy to live with then you can’t go too far wrong, especially in the eyes of the e-C4’s current owners.
