Harking back to famous Citroens of the past, the C6 is a remarkable machine. It looks just as fresh today as it did four years ago. This new flagship V6 diesel adds a little more appeal, but curiously its benefits will be felt more in the pocket than in the seat of the pants. The C6 won’t tempt those in the market for a BMW 5-Series or Jaguar XF, especially at £37,695 – but for true Citroen enthusiasts, it’s still hugely desirable.

If you want to stand out on the road, there are few better ways than in a Citroen C6. With concept car looks and real exclusivity – only a handful have been sold since it arrived in 2006 – the flagship is a true head-turner.

Keen to inject more appeal, Citroen has launched a new 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel. Replacing the outgoing 2.7-litre, it produces 240bhp and 450Nm of torque – improvements of 32bhp and 10Nm respectively.

This looks strong on paper, but the C6 doesn’t feel that punchy. It gives 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds – the same as the outgoing car – and while there’s no lack of overtaking pace once up to speed, the same unit in Jaguar’s XF feels far more responsive. That said, the engine is quiet and the six-speed auto offers smooth, relaxing changes.

Despite the power boost, the unit brings significant gains at the pumps, returning 38.2mpg – up from 32.5mpg. CO2 emissions drop from 230g/km to 195g/km.

Elsewhere, it’s business as usual. Apart from the fussy centre console, the beige leather cabin is pure avant-garde, with its ‘half-moon’ door bins and head-up display. The air-suspension offers a wonderfully floaty ride – even if it does get caught out by small bumps – although the steering has strange weighting and corners are best taken at leisurely pace. It all adds up to a curious mix, but one that’s not without appeal.
