Sporty new Honda Jazz Advance Sport arrives with extra power

Exterior tweaks and a revised hybrid powertrain for new Jazz Advance Sport

In the 20 years the Honda Jazz has been sold in the UK, we’ve never had a full-fat Type R version but, while the practical supermini doesn’t exactly have a sporty aura, that’s not stopped Honda coming out with the new Advance Sport version.

As the name suggests, the Advance Sport is a more performance-focused model of the Jazz, which not only comes with a new exterior but a more powerful drivetrain as well. Honda says sales of the new Jazz Advance Sport will commence in early 2023.

Starting with the front of the Advance Sport, there’s a new grille design with dark headlight inserts plus a more aggressive front bumper which Honda says gives the “Jazz a more purposeful appearance”. Unique 16-inch alloy wheels and gloss black wing mirrors help the new model stand out as the sportiest version of the Jazz range.

Inside we can see black synthetic suede, a new three-spoke steering wheel and yellow stitching throughout - which are all specific to the Advance Sport. As for the infotainment, the same seven-inch digital driver display and nine-inch CONNECT touchscreen is carried over.

Honda has tackled the Jazz’s hybrid powertrain to give it more power in the Advance Sport. The total output has gone up 14bhp to 120bhp thanks to improvements to the two electric motors and the 1.5-litre petrol engine. While performance figures haven’t been revealed yet, we expect a slightly quicker 0-62mph time than the current car’s 9.4 seconds.

The automatic CVT transmission has also been revised and Honda claims it has improved “smoothness and driveability to deliver a more engaging driving experience”. The throttle pedal input has been recalibrated too, allowing for better responsiveness. The rev limit has been raised to 6,300rpm.

The Advance Sport’s suspension has also been looked at. Honda has decreased the front spring rate by eight per cent and 20 per cent at the rear and there are all-new stiffer dampers.

The introduction of the Advance Sport brings changes elsewhere in the Jazz range. Mid-range Elegance and Advance grades gain a new grille, revised front and rear bumpers, plus extra alloy wheel colour options. The SUV-inspired Crosstar model receives a bespoke grille with a honeycomb design, silver inserts on the bumper which according to Honda look like underbody protection and new side skirts.

Honda hasn’t revealed pricing for the updated range but given the fairly extensive changes, expect a decent bump up in pricing from the outgoing £27,610 EX Style range-topper.
