The SEAT Mii may look familiar to you – not surprising, really, as it’s mechanically identical to two other cars on this list. The Skoda Citigo and VW up! share the Mii’s platform, and it’s this sharing-is-caring attitude that allows the VW Group to produce essentially the same car under three different brands.

Choosing between them isn’t as simple as picking a badge, though, as the three cars do have slight tweaks that will appeal in different ways. While the Skoda Citigo is available with ‘sporty’ touches like racing stripes, those after a subtler styling upgrade are able to go for the SEAT ‘Mii by Mango’, with an altogether classier finish.

Elsewhere, it’s business as usual – which means the same choice of engines as the Citigo. A 1.0-litre engine with either 59bhp or 74bhp is never going to set the world alight, but it’s easily sufficient for town duties and once up to speed on the motorway it buzzes along happily.

Excellent fuel economy – the same as the Citigo – is another feather in the Mii’s cap, and the supple ride and fun handling continue to impress.

So why not choose this over a Citigo? The first reason is price. The Citigo is cheaper in all versions and it’s also more generously equipped – sat-nav is an optional extra even on the top-spec Mii. Styling is a personal choice, but we feel the Mii just doesn’t look as smart as its stablemates.

Don’t be put off though – if you need a fun-to-drive, practical city car, the Mii should be at the top of your shortlist just as its siblings are.
