New Mercedes-Maybach S650 arrives with £260k pricetag

Mercerdes’ rival to the Rolls-Royce Dawn debuts at the 2016 LA Motor Show before going on sale in spring 2017

The expansion of the Mercedes-Maybach luxury brand continues, as the firm’s first convertible has been unveiled to the world at the Los Angeles Motor Show. The Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet is priced from €300,000, and will arrive in the spring of 2017.

Only 300 examples of the S 650 Cabriolet are due to be made worldwide, although at that price (around £260,000) it’s got tough competition in the form of the Rolls-Royce Dawn which starts at £267,000. It’s based on the existing Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet, with the same 621bhp 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 powering it.

The exterior proportions are the same as the S-Class drop-top but there are a number of exclusive Maybach changes. New 20-inch forged chrome wheels dominate the look, while a new front bumper design, extra chrome trim and Maybach emblems also feature on the wing and the puddle light projection.

The interior is said to be inspired by the ambience of a luxury yacht, with ‘waterfall-like’ leather trim and diamond quilting on the seat bolsters. Unique trim elements can be individually commissioned by each owner, including a variety of options for the doors, instrument panel and dashboard.

Special hand-finished veneers also feature with a three-dimensional effect, while deep-pile floor mats, a Maybach-badged steering wheel and chrome painted numbered plaques also feature. There are nine new colour combinations for the interior, too, with extra scope for personalisation available.

Merc claims that every option available on the S-Class, including the AIRSCARF neck-heating system and the Swarovski crystal headlamps, is thrown in as standard on the Maybach S 650, while additional kit includes a special travel luggage set and diamond quilted car cover. You even get a signed certificate from Mercedes CEO Dr Dieter Zetsche.

Under the skin, the Maybach version is unchanged from the S65 Cabrolet, with the same AIRMATIC adaptive suspension and seven-speed automatic gearbox. It’s capable of 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds and is restricted to 155mph. CO2 emissions are 272g/km, and it manages 23.5mpg combined.
