The Mazda MX-30 displayed a sparkling performance at the Euro NCAP crash tests, returning with a five-star safety rating under the 2020 testing regime. Its results break down as 91 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupant protection, 68 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 73 per cent for safety assist technology.

Behind these strong scores are a range of passive and active safety systems, with these active aids grouped under Mazda’s i-Activesense banner. All MX-30 models get Driver Attention Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring, plus Emergency Lane-Keeping assist and Lane Departure Warning.

Further up the range, Makato trim comes with Mazda’s Smart Brake Support rear, an automatic emergency braking system while reversing that helps prevent low-speed parking bumps. It also has Rear Cross Traffic Alert to help when reversing out of a parking space or driveway into traffic by warning you of approaching cars. We found the Active Brake support a little too eager to warn of impending collisions, picking up parked cars on the outside of bends, for example, but better to be safe than sorry. This range-topping MX-30 also has adaptive headlights that prevent blinding oncoming traffic while illuminating as much of the road as possible.

There’s little to go on regarding the MX-30’s longer-term reliability, but Mazda as a brand usually enjoys a strong showing in our Driver Power survey. Mazda placed 7th out of 32 manufacturers, placing much higher than MINI, Hyundai, Honda, Nissan, Vauxhall, and Fiat.

Warranty

The battery in the MX-30 is covered by an 8-year or 100,000-mile warranty covering all repair or replacement costs caused by unexpected malfunction. The rest of the car is covered by Mazda’s standard 3-year/60,000-mile warranty, one of the industry's less generous.

Servicing

The MX-30 in both electric and R-EV models generally needs servicing every 12 months or 12,500 miles, although that could be reduced depending upon your driving style.

You can purchase a three-year servicing plan for the electric version of the MX-30 for a one-off fee of £399, or £12.09 per month. The cost for the R-EV model hasn’t been confirmed yet, but we’ll update this section when this information becomes available
