New Volkswagen Transporter van range to launch in Autumn

VW’s Transporter, Caravelle and California family receive an all-electric powertrain, infotainment updates and a new power steering set-up

Volkswagen has revealed the latest version of its Transporter van, Caravelle people carrier and California camper. Called the T6.1, the updated range comes with a host of technology revisions, a restyled nose and a new all-electric powertrain. Prices are yet to be announced, but the new Transporter is expected to reach the market by Autumn this year.

Technology revisions include a new electromechanical power steering system. Replacing the old model’s hydraulic tech allows support for active steering intervention. One of the features offered by the new system is Volkswagen’s Cross Wind Assist, which automatically stabilises the Transporter in strong gusts.

Other safety systems for Volkswagen’s latest van-based family include traffic assist, parking assist and the newly-introduced trailer assist, which helps to ease the stress during complicated trailer manoeuvres.

Inside, an overhauled infotainment system comprises of a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 9.2-inch touchscreen with support for Apple CarPlay. The system can also tune in to internet radio stations and online music streaming services thanks to the addition of an integrated eSIM.

Elsewhere, the Volkswagen Transporter will receive a better standard specification. Electric windows, central locking, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, LED interior lights and a Bluetooth-enabled stereo are now included. A 230-volt AC supply allows power tools to be run using the van’s powertrain.

A range of powertrains will be available from launch. Four versions of Volkswagen’s 2.0-litre four cylinder turbo diesel will be offered, with power ranging between 87bhp in the entry-level model and 193bhp in the range-topping BiTurbo model. The most powerful engine is paired with 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a DSG gearbox.

Most significant is the introduction of an all-electric variant. Built in collaboration with ABT, the system produces 108bhp and is available with either a 38.8kWh or 77.6kWh battery pack, with the largest unit offering a claimed driving range in excess of 250 miles.
