Volkswagen up! GTI - front action

Price: £13,750 (3dr)Engine: 1.0-litre 3cyl turbocharged petrol
Power: 113bhpTorque: 200Nm0-62mph: 8.8 secondsTop speed: 122mph

The Volkswagen up! GTI is a compact package of lively handling and enjoyable performance. On paper it harks back to the same levels of performance as the original mk1 Golf GTI, but in reality it is a very different proposition. Underneath the bonnet there is a turbocharged three-cylinder, which doesn’t pack excessive amounts of power, but has enough about it to make the little VW very nippy.

Volkswagen up! GTI review

Inside the Tartan interior acts as a throwback to mk1 Golf GTI, but what isn’t a throwback is the levels of safety equipment. While you can have a great time behind the wheel, the up! also comes with hill hold assist, four airbags and Electronic Stability Program as standard, with there also being an option for emergency city braking. The best part? All this comes in at under £14k.
