You can’t argue with the Dacia Logan’s practical, no-frills approach when it comes to running costs. It offers the boot space of a class of cars that includes the VW Golf and Ford Focus estate, but in the spec listed here costs under ten grand.

Again, the change to the road tax rules has penalised the diesel model so the entry-level petrol Logan with a 1.0 litre engine is the cheaper car to run. It’s shockingly cheap to buy at less than 7k, it just about matches the diesel’s 41 per cent predicted depreciation, although not its 81mpg economy. You’ll have to wind the windows up by yourself whichever version you go for, though.
