There’s no denying Renault is on a roll when it comes to hot hatches. With its rapid Renaultsport badged models, the French firm has taken the pocket rocket class by storm.

Now bosses are stepping up a gear with the all new Megane RS 250 Cup. Based on rakish coupe version of the company’s family hatch, the newcomer promises driving thrills, style and practicality in equal measure. We go behind the wheel to find out if it measures up on UK roads.

At a glance there’s no mistaking the Renault’s performance potential. A deeper front bumper, chunky wheel arch extensions and wider sills all add muscle to the Megane’s shape.

Inside, the changes are more low key. Apart from yellow stitching for the think rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, gearlever and door panels, the cabin is virtually the same as the standard Megane. There’s space for five adults, although the three-door only layout makes acccess to the rear seats a little tricky. However, for most hot hatch owners practicality takes a back seat to performance - and the Megane doesn’t disappoint.

The 247bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre engine delivers blistering performance, catapulting the Renault from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds. And while it lacks a stirring soundtrack, the unit is smooth and quick-revving. But it’s the chassis that shines brightest on the 250.

Standard Reanultsport Megane 250 models get uprated suspension, while our entry-level Cup version gets even lower and stiffer springs, thicker anti-roll bars, a limited slip differential and special Michelin Sport tyres. The result is one of the sharpest and most involving hot hatches you can buy. Better still, Renault’s clever front suspension geometery virtually eliminates torque steer, while the standard Brembo brakes serve-up stomach-churning stopping power.

At £21,995, the French flier even represents decent value for money, undercutting the faster but less accomplised Ford Focus RS by a whopping £5,000!

Rival: Ford Focus RS
With 301bhp and the clever RevoKnuckle suspension, the fastest Ford blends pace and thrills. But it’s not as much fun as the stripped-out Renault – plus, it costs £5,000 more.

French trash

Its a Renault, renowed for producing cheap & nasty cars that come in the bottom of JD Power & customer satisfaction surveys. You buy one of these & watch it depreciates as bad as an Alfa.

The previous model didn't sell, they had to churn out "special editions" to shift the cars, looks like this model would be heading the same way.

Renault = poor reliability = low residuals. You can't polish a turd.

Megane 250RS

Another great review to go with all the others. Scott1234 instead of gobbing off you want try driving one and I am sure you will learn how wrong you are with your very 'old hat' views.

Poor comparison

You can't compare this to a Focus RS as this is a stripped out, ligtened track car - unlike the Focus RS which still has all the luxuries and still goes like stink.

Another Quick Renault... nice!

Comparisons aside, the Megan 250 Cup looks like another great ride for day-to-day commuting, and a vehicle that I wouldn't be too embarrassed taking for a drive through the countryside.
Living in Australia, the Renault Cup range has become a it of a cult car among enthusiasts (I drive Mits EVO 6 TME) and has gained some worthy respect here as a great alternative to the bland Golf GTI and the "WOW - check out the size of my exhaust and intercooler" WRX, both of which are just way too common now.

re: Poor comparison

everton2004 - did you actually read the article?

This Megane is not a stripped out track car - that was the R26.R!

This is a brand new hot hatch that has equipment and refinement to match the Focus RS and still undercut it by a significant amount of money.

What a Car

Everytime i look at the megane 250 i see something better on it, it looks great, and from the reviews of EVERY car magazine goes and handles great. Renaults are getting better and better and in reply to the top comment my dad has had a 1998 Renault clio for 5 years now and reliability has been perfect, at all its service and mots its only needed the normal replacement carried out and nothing has fallen off!
Going to test drive a red 250 next saturday with the 19" alloys with my parents Cant wait!!

A Superb Hot Renault

I love this Renault because of the way it looks and the way it drives. I know it's not as hardcore as the R26.R but round a track it is faster. I like the more day to day use approach because if you buy one you wan't to be able to use it independently. Scott1234, you should go and drive one before saying utter rubbish like that. The Megane 250 is not a ''turd'' as you describe it most ignorrantly. Renault's are very good cars nowadays and you're thinking of old Renault's.

A proper hot hatch

scott1234 you hav'nt a clue...and are you an essex boy ?

The renault megane cup is a true hot hatch manufactured and engineered by the same company. It has no torque steer issues unlike the new focus and does not rely on a swedish companies powerplant for its go. It will blitz the focus around any race track you wish and still take you home in comfort. (no air con to save on weight)
Lets also not forget the all conquering Clio cup 200 which again will spank your dagenham dustbin. Do youself a favour and go and test drive a Megane or Clio Cup and you will be converted.

FIRST OPINION

Few hot hatches can match the Mégane 250 for driving fun, particularly in hardcore Cup trim. Better still, it looks fantastic and delivers decent versatility – although family buyers might struggle with the three-door layout. Add in the great value price of the entry-level Cup, and the Renault has what it takes to beat the class leaders.
