Maserati announces return to racing with 2023 Formula E entry

Maserati’s comeback to racing sees it become the first Italian brand to compete in Formula E

After a 12-year hiatus, Maserati has announced a grand return to motorsport. The company has confirmed it has a place on the grid for the 2023 Formula E season.

Maserati will become the first Italian brand to compete in the sport, beating rivals Ferrari and Alfa Romeo to the punch - both of which have teams that compete in Formula One.

The brand hopes its efforts in Formula E will also help boost sales and benefit development of its upcoming range of electric vehicles. Later this year, the brand will launch the Grecale SUV and the new GranTurismo, both of which have electric variants on the horizon.

There’s also an electric version of the MC20 supercar in the works, and it’s looking increasingly likely that all of these important launches will dovetail with Maserati’s foray into Formula E.

Jean-Marc Finot, Senior Vice President of Stellantis Motorsport, said: “It is a great pleasure for Stellantis Motorsport to play a part in getting Maserati back in the race.

“Beyond this piece of history, Maserati Formula E will be our technological laboratory to accelerate the development of high-efficiency electrified powertrains and intelligent software for our road sports cars. Formula E is the perfect Championship for this purpose and we are very proud to be the first Italian brand to join in.”

Maserati has quite the reputation to uphold when it enters Formula E as, in the past, the brand has enjoyed success in most of the racing divisions it has entered. For example, in the 1926 Targo Florio, which was the firm’s first foray into racing, the Tipo 26 won its class.

Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss both piloted Maseratis to victory in the 1957 F1 World Championship and, more recently, the MC12 won 22 races and 14 Championship titles (including three victories at the 24 Hours of Spa) in the now defunct FIA GT Championship.

Maserati’s CEO, Davide Grasso, said: “We are very proud to be back where we belong as protagonists in the world of racing. We are powered by passion and innovative by nature. We have a long history of world-class excellence in competition and we are ready to drive performance in the future.”
