Life is tough on wheels! They have to survive the worst the weather can throw at them, plus withstand searing heat and brake dust. And all of this leads to baked-on grime that's hard to remove.

Wheel cleaners are the most aggressive of all valeting products. Often acids or alkalis, they draw a tricky line between shifting the black dust but not damaging the rim - or you. A good cleaner is a car care essential, yet which is the one to put on your workshop shelf? We took 16 of the biggest sellers to find out.

Of course, in some cases, rim cleaner just isn't enough to get your alloys look-ing good. If they're damaged rather than dirty, you might need a refurb - and on Page 60 we tell you all you need to know about these inexpensive repairs.

Verdict

Both Wonder Wheels and Comma are at the top of the tree yet again. We can't split the two on cleaning power, but the former just has the edge on value. Next up is the excellently priced Wynn's cleaner.
