Best Used Cabriolet

Drop-tops are a firm British favourite, but can the Audi A4 keep hold of its crown for yet another year?

Winner: Audi A4 Cabriolet

(2005 to 2009) Prices: £11,000-£28,000

Six years is a long time – but that’s how long Audi has held the used cabriolet crown for! The classy A4 drop-top is beautifully built, and Audi’s decision to favour a traditional fabric roof instead of a fashionable folding metal hard-top has clearly gone down a storm with buyers.

This generation of A4 has been on the market for five years, and was replaced by the current A5-based cabrio in 2009. Residual values are incredibly healthy, so while the car isn’t cheap to buy, it should still be worth a decent amount when you come to sell.

Early models with a few miles on the clock can be found for little more than £10,000. Second-hand buyers can choose from a huge selection of engines. Diesel models hold their value better than petrol-powered equivalents – go for the 2.0-litre TDI for economy, as it offers 44.1mpg, but the 3.0-litre packs more punch.

The 1.8-litre petrol versions are real bargains, and worth a look if you’re on a budget. Steer clear of poorly equipped entry-level models if you can; these can be hard to shift later on. If you can find a generously specced S line model or a car with lots of options, go for it. Audi dealers are best for nearly new A4s, as aftersales support is good. Check out independent forecourts and private sellers for older examples, though.

Nearly New: BMW 3-Series

(2007 to date) Prices: £17,000-£38,000

Image counts in this class, and the 3-Series Convertible leads the way in that respect. Sharp looks and a desirable badge keep it firmly in vogue, while the rear-wheel-drive handling is terrific fun. Prices are still high, and they’re likely to remain that way for some time, as the Beemer holds its value well.

Value Choice: Volkswagen Eos

(2006 to date) Prices: £10,000-£23,000

An affordable second-hand buy, but the Eos is still classy and well built inside. It's a real head-turner, on account of its quirky looks and relative rarity on UK roads. Resale values are still  strong, even though the car doesn't wear a premium badge.
