Best Used Compact Executive

BMW's 3-series tops the compact executive class, just beating its German rivals from Audi and Mercedes.

Winner: BMW 3-Series

(2005 to date)Prices: £7,500-£29,000

The 3-Series is our top used compact executive car – and for good reason. Scalpel-sharp rear-wheel-drive handling makes it the most entertaining model in its class, but there’s far more to the BMW than that. Reliability is good, the 460-litre boot is ample and, while the interior layout isn’t the most exciting, it’s extremely well built.

Early cars have now taken the brunt of their depreciation, too, so they’re cheaper than ever and can be found for well under £8,000. High-mileage models cost even less. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to engines. It’s difficult not to love the six-cylinder diesel-powered 330d – it’s expensive, but silky smooth and packs a hearty 245bhp, for genuinely impressive performance.

Best all-rounder, though, is the 320d, as it offers 163bhp and a potential 49.6mpg. Petrol versions such as the 318i and 320i are the most affordable by a long way. Mid-spec SE models are common and they are affordable, but specced-up M Sport and Business Edition cars will have lost more of their new value, so they’re worth seeking out for their extra kit.

Online retailers such as Carsite.co.uk and Autoquake.com are great places to find second-hand examples. These firms buy their cars directly from business fleets, which keeps prices lower than usual, and BMW’s compact executive is one of their most common models.

Nearly new: Mercedes C-Class

(2007 to date) Prices: £13,000-£35,000

The current C-Class is becoming more common on used forecourts. Top build, smooth engines and sharp looks all appeal, but it’s not as good to drive as a 3-Series. Most examples are at main dealers, covered by Merc’s approved scheme.

Value choice: Audi A4

(2001-2008) Prices: £4,000-£20,000

Early A4s of this generation are now tantalisingly cheap, and Audi’s superb quality means they’re built to last. A facelift in 2005 added a new look and suspension tweaks, but these cars will cost more. Either way, the A4 is a solid choice
