Ford Fiesta
Economy: 76.3mpg, CO2/road tax: 98g/km/£0
Is there no end to the Fiesta’s talents? Two years after launch, the Ford baby still rules the supermini roost.
Eye-catching looks, a practical cabin and sharp driving dynamics are key to its appeal. Whether you pick the entry-level model or racy Zetec-S range-topper, there’s a Fiesta for all tastes and budgets.
And if you’re looking to save on running costs, the green-minded Econetic version is just the ticket.
The diesel hatch promises an amazing 76.3mpg on the combined cycle, while 98g/km emissions mean road tax is free. Yet engineers have achieved these figures with surprisingly few technical tweaks. There’s a special aerodynamic bodykit, lowered suspension and low-rolling-resistance tyres. Under the skin are taller gear ratios, low-viscosity oils and a revised electronic engine management system.
But the best news is that the driving experience isn’t compromised. Quick steering, strong grip and great poise make the Fiesta terrific fun.
It’s practical, too, with space for five adults in the cabin. Essentials like air-con and ESP don’t take away from the basic feel inside the Econetic, but if you want more kit, Zetec and Titanium models with the standard 1.4 and 1.6-litre diesel engines return 67.2mpg. Saving fuel has never been so painless.
