Audi A1
Economy: 70.6mpg, CO2/road tax: 105g/km/£20
Its launch has brought huge fanfare, and the Audi A1 takes on the mighty MINI with a blend of big car desirability and supermini running costs.
But there’s nothing big about the fuel bills you’ll face if you choose any version powered by the punchy 104bhp 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine. With the aid of a smooth stop-start system, the common-rail powerplant is capable of returning in excess of 70mpg.
However, the A1 certainly doesn’t look or feel like a fuel-saving special. With its bold grille, aggressively styled headlamps and classy detailing, it clearly takes design cues from larger Audis. As with the MINI, buyers can choose from a range of personalisation options, while inside, the beautifully built cabin scores top marks for its premium feel. Occupants in the back get more room than in the Brit, too.
Standard equipment is adequate rather than generous – you’ll pay an extra £165 for a leather steering wheel on the entry-level SE. Nevertheless, when you combine the ultra-low fuel bills with cast-iron residuals of 53 per cent, customers should have some extra cash to spend on options.
