9Volkswagen Golf (new)88.65%
Another model thatÂ’'s found a place in its owners'Â’ hearts in 2007 is the MkV Golf. Last year, you voted it 23rd, but this time itÂ’'s a different story, with the VW in the top 10. A total of 52 per cent of owners chose a diesel, helping the model to achieve good scores for both performance and running costs. An average score for reliability stopped the Golf from climbing higher, yet overall you are very satisfied with it. An estate will be next to join the range, which should see the practicality rating boosted, too.

“My car has exceeded my expectations. The performance, handling and comfort are of a very high standard, and I think it offers fantastic value for money.”
Mr Graeme Walker - Glasgow“Truly great car, torque curve could stretch a little higher for overtaking (aftermarket re-chipping is tempting) but otherwise does 'exactly what it says on the tin'. Elusive problem was dud-fuel lift-pump which was diagnosable on original failure but remedy delayed by VW's insistence in driving the diagnostic process from on high and not trusting the dealer's judgment (and mine) that it was the fuel pump.”
Mr David Mayle - Essex“Quick (I've got the GTi), nice looking, fun to drive, but not as well made as I was expecting, and I'm disappointed not to find the same level of equipment that was on my previous car (Vectra). It also drinks fuel like there's no tomorrow.”
Mr Matt Moon - Devon“With its 2-litre turbo diesel the car can pack a bit of a punch and is comfortable to drive over long distances whilst still being fun to drive in urban areas. Overall a good car.”
Mr Magnus Peterrson - Henley“Good design, well made and interesting to drive.”
Mr Jonathan Crispe – Isle of Man“My car is a Golf GTi 200 DSG. The DSG gearbox is fantastic and perfect for a combination of city, motorway and B-road driving. As a pure GTI, it’s a bit too refined to be honest, I think it’s typical of cars these days that are so well built, that it’s not so much a sports car as a fast luxury hatchback. A bit boring to be honest, but definitely the best value car I can think of, or ever owned. It just does everything, brilliantly.”
Mr Chris Chadwick - Leeds“My car exceeds what I thought it might be like before getting the keys. The performance, handling and comfort are of a great standard and I think it offers fantastic value for money.”
Mr Graeme Walker - Lanarkshire“This is my 3rd VW, all bought new. Whilst the other two proved reliable, this one's ECU failed in the first two weeks with only 300 miles on the clock. The dealer was genuinely concerned and provided a hire car free of charge, but it took three weeks to obtain the part from Germany. Rather a disappointing start which does not inspire confidence in what is otherwise an excellent car.”
Mr Adrian Bathurst - Surrey“Extremely impressed. Drifts around town like a far larger, more expensive car, then put your foot down and it is transformed into a very quick, nimble, eager pocket rocket. Plus I have the practicality of a huge boot space when the rear seats are folded down.”
Mr Des Saxby - Staffordshire“The latest GTI is a really well sorted car and the DSG gearbox is the best transmission i have ever experienced in a car. The build quality is first rate.”
Mr David Adams - Dorset“Very good, would recommend it to others. Will always buy VW because of past and current experience.”
Mr Sean Fackrell - Berkshire“Poor paint quality, indifference to customers, having to go back four times to get the right person to agree the fault, finish flaking on alloys, mats that wear through in six months, on the positive perhaps the best diesel engine on the market for power output/tune ability.”
Mr Nigel Varley - Knottingly“Very reliable, reasonably comfortable, could do with thinner A-pillars and radio controls on steering wheel. Good car.”
Mr Enrico Prentice - Scotland“Very pleased with my choice. It's an R32 - big engine - low mileage so don't mind the 20 miles to the gallon!”
