A disappointing 78th position for handling and 86th for performance are poor for a car sold on its sporty image; 96th place for build quality is also a letdown, so the firm needs to boost standards.

MANUFACTURER VERDICT

As Alfa falls, owner Fiat has jumped six places in the manufacturer chart. Although the 500 debuted in a disappointing 86th in the Top 100, it has still helped to lift the Italians’ overall average.
