Can Peugeot MPV score on space and handling?

It's clear that Peugeot hasn’t re-invented the family car class with the updated 407 – so could the Partner Tepee cause a storm in the MPV sector?

The distinctive people carrier is based on the company’s new Partner van, and isn’t short on space as a result. In the guise of this top-spec 1.6-litre HDi Outdoor, it stands out, too.

The first thing you notice is its chunky bodykit, which gives the front end a sporty look. A long, sloping windscreen and glass roof add a sense of space.

Our Outdoor model is also off-road-ready – it has raised suspension, a protection tray under the engine and added side rubbing strips, as well as side and curtain airbags.

Inside, the five-seat cabin is comfortable, with plenty of room in the back. And with the seats folded, it’s difficult not to be impressed by the massive 3,000-litre boot.

On the road, the Tepee is car-like to drive. While it can be a bit vague through tight corners, the handling is tidy and the ride smooth.

The 1.6-litre turbodiesel has plenty of pace – it feels a lot quicker than its 14.3-second 0-60mph time suggests. Factor in 50.4mpg economy, and you have a people carrier that’s spacious and cheap to run.

Rival: VW Caddy Maxi Life
THE Caddy matches the Tepee for space, and delivers similar performance for a price close to the Peugeot’s. But it trails when it comes to the handling.

FIRST OPINION

Once you get to grips with its unusual looks, you can start to take the Tepee for what it is: a highly versatile and practical vehicle. The 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine is a pleasure to use, and you’ll find it hard to get more storage space out of any similar-sized car. The Peugeot isn’t for fashion-conscious motorists – but families wanting flexibility at a bargain price should give it closer inspection.
