COSWORTH isn’t the only company to turn up the wick on a hot hatchback – SEAT is at it, too! And the new Leon Cupra R is the Spanish firm’s most powerful car ever.
Under the bonnet lies the same 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder turbo as is found in VW’s Golf R and the Audi S3. It’s not short on punch, producing 261bhp at 6,000rpm and 350Nm of torque from just 2,500rpm.
That propels the SEAT from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds – only three-tenths slower than Ford’s mighty Focus RS. In-gear response is strong with lots of low-down urge and sustained pull right to the red line.
Surprisingly, the Cupra R is also quite efficient, delivering 34.9mpg combined economy and putting out 190g/km of CO2. Thanks to uprated brakes, sports suspension and the same XDS electronic differential as you get on a Golf GTI, it handles well, too. Body roll is virtually eliminated and there’s plenty of grip – but the ride is firm and the steering numb.
It costs £3,705 more than the standard 237bhp Cupra, too, yet this range-topping R version doesn’t bring many visual tweaks. It gets a new front grille, gloss black door mirrors, larger rear diffuser finished in the same gloss effect and twin central exhaust pipes. R logos and 19-inch alloys complete the package.
Inside, the white diamond-stitched leather sports seats stand out most, while the squared-off steering wheel and aluminium pedals add to the car’s sporty persona. Standard kit is impressive, and the rest of the cabin feels well built. So, is the R a worthy flagship? We can’t criticise
its performance potential, but the regular Cupra is nearly as fast, and much cheaper – and looks far more tempting.

Just wish I could ditch the Mondeo company car and go back to having a Leon AGAIN!! This would be the one for sure. For exterior looks the Leons have knocked spots of most 5, and even 3 door hatch backs since this style was released. The Cupra R will still turn heads without doubt.. Who cares about the 3 tenths!!!
No thanks, Megane 250 anyday. Unless you really need back doors. Better looking, faster, better handling and cheaper. Have I missed anything?
the seat is better built than any french car
will last longer hold its value better
and i think is prettier than most
Danny200878.......you've missed the main point.....the Megane is French...built to a price and it shows
The Megane is far better built than any previous Renaults. They feel very "German" - They're actually built in Spain
darrylt1 - you've missed the point. A hot hatch is supposed to be fast, great handling, masses of fun to drive and affordable. All things the Megane does VERY well. Please refer to Auto Express' review. I won What Car Hot Hatch of the Year. Need I say more? I think not.......
Megane better looking than the Leon? Not a chance, although I readily admit its a nice car and a good hot hatch. If it was a company car, it might be OK to have one, but why is it that company's don't buy Renaults? Maybe it is the advice I was given by an AA man once - never to even consider Renault's as their break down rates are one of the worst and the depreciation is bad. The Leon at least comes from the Audi stable, is reliable, very well built and holds its value very well. I speak from experience having owned 3 Leons, plus 2 Altea's.
I do think however (even as a hardened SEAT fanatic) that the price premium for the R over the standard Cupra takes some justifying and personally, I still believe the FR is the best value Leon of the lot.
I took collection of my Megane 250 Cup in March and so far hasn't missed a beat. It has a aftermarket cat back exhaust and an air filter fitted. It pulled 271bhp on the dyno after 4000 miles well above stated power much as EVO's test car did.
Did all you folks miss Fifth Gear on the telly where they put it up against the much more expensive Scirocco R (same engine) and the Focus RS? It killed them both round the track.
The Cupra's electronic diff can only hope to come close to the real limited slip diff fitted to my little beauty.
Please do me a favour. Maybe worth a punt at 20k but 25k?
just got new cupra r well worth the money awsome car
Just bought one in Sweden. Seat is doing so bad here that Seat gives instant discount on the Cupra R. It is basically sold for what the the rest of Europe pays for the regular Cupra.
With sunroof, Bi-xenon, Seat media system, bluetooth and optical parking sensors a gave them 23 700£. Thats almost 4 000£ of extras. So Oliver - welcome to Sweden:-)!
There’s lots to like about this hot Leon. The 2.0-litre TSI engine is a great performer, the chassis isn’t short on grip and kit is generous. But for a flagship hot hatch, the R just doesn’t excite in the way rivals do. And it’s difficult to justify the premium over the already very capable Cupra.
