Nissan Juke

We drive the stylish younger brother to Nissan's Qashqai.

Nissan Juke

July 2010

Doing things differently has proved very successful for Nissan. When the Qashqai arrived in 2007, offering people a more exciting alternative to the run-of-the-mill family hatchback, it turned the Japanese firm's ailing fortunes around. Now Nissan is hoping for similar success with its baby brother - the Juke.

Arriving at dealers in September, it will take on premium small cars such as the MINI and Audi A1. However, with prices starting from £12,795, the Juke will also temp people out of higher spec versions of more mainstream superminis too.

Video: watch CarBuyer's video review of the Nissan Juke

It's not hard to see why. Visually, there is little this side of a supercar that's as striking. Side-on, it looks like Nissan has taken the top half of a GT-R, stuck it on the bottom half of a Pathfinder, and then shrunk the result while, from the front it's more like a moonbuggy. Crossed with a frog. Make no mistake, this is a marmite car‚ you either love or hate the design. Whatever your opinion though, there can be no denying the Juke's originality.

If only it was as exciting inside. Bar a pearlescent centre console, which mimics the shape of a motorbike's fuel tank, the interior fails to live up to the drama created by the exterior. Mid to higher spec versions get a driving computer which not only allows you to change the car's mode between sport, normal and eco but can show you how much G-Force you are pulling, just like in a GT-R. But really this is just a marketing gimmick that most poeple won't bother with after the first week of ownership. And it can't hide the fact that compared to a MINI, overall the cabin feels a little low rent.

The Juke beats the MINI on practicality though. The boot is a decent size and the rear seats fold down completely flat. However, your average supermini will be better for carrying passengers in the back as while the Nissan has decent leg space, the sloping roof seriously compromises rear headroom.

Does this matter though? Not really. This is a car for extroverts who want to turn heads round town, not play taxi. And in the urban environment the Juke‚΄ôs crossover concept works well. That raised ride height allows you to skip painlessly over speed humps while the lofty driving position gives you a great view over other traffic.

The Juke also impresses on the open road. It's reasonably quiet and comfortable, although the slightly stiff suspension does get a bit jittery on poorer surfaces. However, the pay-off for the sporty set-up is very little body roll through corners.

Don't expect MINI levels of fun though. The chassis is nowhere near as talented and the steering is totally numb. This is a shame, as when fitted with Nissan‚΄ôs new 187bhp 1.6-litre turbochargd petrol engine, the Juke delivers hot hatch performance. Nissan claims it's good for 0-62mph in just eight seconds but from the driver‚΄ôs seat it feels even quicker.

And that brings us back to the beginning. Is the Juke really likely to be as big a hit as the Qashqai (which incidentally was the fifth best selling car in Britain last month)? Based on our initial impressions and the fact that Nissan has already sold 1,000 cars three months before it officially goes on sale, the answer has to be yes. Probably more so.

Rival - MINI Cooper S
The cool retro looks and sparkling chassis means the MINI appeals equally to both style and fun seekers. But while it has the Juke beaten in terms of heritage and driving enjoyment, its pricier, not as well equipped and far less comfortable or practical. Plus it's now as common as fish and chips.

British designed and built

The most important part of the review is missing - this car was designed in London and will be built in Sunderland. This is the top reason for me why it's top of my shopping list.

Pathetic

This car looks hilarious. Surely Nissan actually mean Joke?? It's so embarrassingly bad. Please leave Australia off the list, I couldn't stand to see it on the road. Quite pathetic Nissan!

Good effort.

Brave and different. Good luck to Nissan.

Juke joke

There's at least one reason for drving this car - that way you can't see the front view!
It looks absolutely awful!

kutting edge

This car is on the cutting edge of design. All you drivers in your bland same ole designs will be dicing the juke because you can't afford one. I will be the first in line to buy one.

By tahoemike on 5 September, 2010, 8:32am

Kutting Edge??

Was that title a stab at grown up street talk? We will be "dicing the Duke" ??? Because we can't afford one????

I would think you mean "dissing"! That is to say bad things about it! No, we will be "dissing" it because it looks like a cartoon character and as for "can't afford one".. I drive an M3 and my wife has a Mini JCW. In the garage we have an M5! I think I may be able to afford one, but just wouldn't be seen in one!

So, what do you want to drive when you grow up?

By Rumour on 14 September, 2010, 3:20pm

yeeughh!!

There are better things to spend 13 K on.
But hey its got a "G meter" how cool is that? Presumably so you can see how far you can push it into a corner before you lose it, Oh! ............Lost it anyway because I was loooking at the pointless piece of crap G meter when I should have been looking at the road.

distinct

I like the looks of it as well as the 1.6 turbo petrol engine.
It looks better in red and most of all is not like any other small suv on the road. It has style and dares to be different.
Adding the Nissan reliability and you have a perfect affordable and fresh package.
If driving/handling (for the 4x4 1.6 petrol engine) is also to my liking then I'm putting an order at once.

By kirra1 on 21 September, 2010, 1:30pm

Lots of cash required to get a decent spec

Surely if they wanted to appeal to the younger driver (who have more taste than to buy a far eastern built new micra) they should have kept the price down?

By Scampscat on 22 September, 2010, 3:59pm

Nasty

What is the point of it?, It reminds me of the Suzuki X90 which was a big flop.
Maybe wait a 2 or 3 years until they are in the £3000-£4000 price bracket due to no one buying them?.

By dockertrigger on 28 September, 2010, 10:45am

Want one

Thought this was going to be a hairdressers car. My wife dragged me around the showroom and as soon as I sat in it I was hooked. Stylish, bigger than you expect and well screwed together. This car will make you smile and bring some fun back to driving.

By Timboid on 5 October, 2010, 8:49pm

Bye bye Cube, is the Juke next?

Im surprised the Cube is being cut from production. But then to the other extreme, I have to say this is probably the ugliest car I've seen in a long while. The front is all wrong!!

By volvofan on 2 November, 2010, 9:16am

ps

O by the way when so many people are unemployed its made in England just thought I would add that I have loads of money BMW man

By jerome on 9 November, 2010, 5:58pm

Imagine if...

a manufacturer such as Fiat, or a premium brand like BMW who have every one of their cars called ugly on this site, came out with this design.

It'd be slaughtered as one of the ugliest cars ever made.

Waste of Space

They taken a decently sized chassis and put a small cabin on top to give a quirky look which Nissan hopes will be popular.
So much space is wasted in the boot because the tailgate is sloped in at too shallow an angle. Any box or case as high as the rear seat backs would be fouled if more than 30cm from the seats.
They have created 'shoulders' above the wheel arches (most noticable from the rear) to dramatically reduce the overall width of the cabin; again a waste of available space. Which for me sums up the car.

By adrian65allain on 29 January, 2011, 2:30pm

Super fresh looks!

and roomy enough for young family! and with that economy and money I don't need better.

By hubabuba on 4 February, 2011, 9:08am

fresh design?

I totally agree with macsuibhne.
It is really beyond me how some can call this, ... shall we say very weird looking thing, stylish.

The FIAT Multipla was mowed down when it was launched in 1999 as it was often called such things as horrible, ugly, and even worse by a number of critics.
Well it was actually a brilliant design!
FIAT's people carrier had a strong spaceframe, rear crushzone without affecting the rear passengers, decent bootspace, a very clever seating arrangement and it was fun to drive thanks to the excellent roadholding and handling.

So the Italian design was not different for the sake of it or as the French say, it was not l'art pour l'art.
With this Nissan I'm not so sure.

Mean Looking I Like It

Had a test drive in this car last week and it is a pleasure to drive. Visibility is good, is easy to get in and out and is bigger inside than it looks. It handles well and corners pretty good too. In the looks department, it may not appeal to everyone, but I think it looks real mean and I like it. I think this car will sell well like its bigger brother the Qashqai. I drove the 1.6 petrol 5 speed and it is quite nippy although not really brilliant on mpg compared to other cars of 1600cc. Yes, I do like it, it's different, both inside and out and it certainly turned a few heads whilst I was test driving it. Since release in Sept 2010 sales have really took off with up to 6 month waiting times, depending on the spec. I have ordered the 1.6 Accenta Premium which has the Sat Nav and rear reversing camera. I have to wait 3 months before it will be available, but in my opinion, it's worth waiting for. By the way, I am 67 years old and have driven lots of different cars during my 50 years of driving and the Juke is amongst the best.

Just like its bigger brother the Qashqai, the Nissan Juke plays the crossover game with panache - albeit in a slightly smaller package. And while not perfect, its blend of dramatic styling, a lofty driving position, decent handling, reasonable practicality and a tempting price tag means it offers an exciting alternative to not only normal superminis, but premium small cars as well.
