The Koenigsegg CCR could just be the fastest car you've never heard of. Built in the south of Sweden by a wealthy young entrepreneur called Christian von Koenigsegg, the newcomer is an absolutely awesome machine.

It's constructed almost entirely from carbon fibre and powered by a bellowing hand-built supercharged 806bhp V8 engine - and Koenigsegg believes his wild new creation will travel faster than any other road car in history.

If it does, the McLaren F1's long-held claim to be the fastest production car in the world will be left in tatters. Quite some achievement for a virtually unheard of manufacturer which builds only a dozen or so machines a year.

However, there is so much more to the CCR than its stupendous maximum speed. For starters, it is immaculately designed and put together, oozing quality from the tip of its smooth nose to its sculpted tail. And you certainly pay for it - the price tag is a staggering ΂£407,000!

But what's it like to drive? Popping out, up and forward all at the same time, the CCR's doors are fascinating and complex, and right up there with the Lamborghini Murci

FIRST OPINION

Sweden's only supercar may lack the history and pedigree of Italian and German rivals, but thorough engineering, painstaking development and immaculate construction make the Koenigsegg CCR odds-on favourite to become the world's fastest car - perhaps even passing the magic 250mph barrier.

AT A GLANCE

With 806bhp, CCR is the most powerful road car in production
Expected to hit 240-252mph, beating the McLaren F1's record
