Mercedes CLS 500

From the small executive saloon to the hi-tech supercar, Mercedes has something to offer in nearly every sector of the market, each one combining traditional values of sophistication and solidity.

From the small executive saloon to the hi-tech supercar, Mercedes has something to offer in nearly every sector of the market, each one combining traditional values of sophistication and solidity.

However, there's little tradition about the German company's latest offering. The CLS-Class breaks new ground, with the bold claim of being a four-door coupé, designed to tempt buyers out of conventional luxury two-door cars.

From the outside, the CLS has a remarkable blend of established and fresh styling cues. A deep curve running the length of the car is the most striking aspect, while the familiar Merc grille is flanked by a set of 'boomerang' projector headlamps for a distinctive appearance. The overall look is likely to divide opinion, but we think it will be too challenging for many.

Step inside and the mix of new and customary continues. The recognisably Mercedes switchgear is housed in a sweeping dash, the lines of which continue into the door panels, and the shallow side windows and high waistline leave occupants feeling well protected without being claustrophobic.

Indeed, there is plenty of space, despite the swooping profile, although with the low roofline care is needed when getting in. Once you're seated, comfort is a strong plus point, thanks to well designed chairs with optional heating and ventilation, plus massage function. The luxury climate control system also offers individual settings for each rear passenger. Matt wood trim is standard, as are leather seats, adding to the high-quality feel.

Fire up the 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine, and the CLS continues to impress. With 306bhp and 450Nm of torque at its command, the CLS 500 delivers excellent performance for a car of this size. The 0-62mph sprint takes a fraction longer than six seconds, while the top speed is limited to 155mph. Yet despite these performance figures, the V8 is refined and smooth, providing near-silent progress. The hi-tech 7G-Tronic automatic box is well matched to the engine, making short work of high-speed cruising and urban grind.

The luxury car credentials are confirmed by the CLS's ride. There's a choice of three settings on the standard air-suspension, and even the softest offers a pleasing mix of comfort and cornering.

The weight of the V8 engine, along with the fact that the steering, while accurate, is slightly dull, prevents this from being a true sports saloon. But the CLS handles better than the E-Class, which is based on the same platform.

FIRST OPINION

Due to its unique mix of style and sophistication, the main problem facing this Mercedes is the lack of direct competition.

Without a conventional class rival, the stylish newcomer's success rests on a positive reaction from the public to the concept of a four-door luxury coupé. Even at £52,115, the CLS is a truly desirable car.

AT A GLANCE

There's something familiar about the CLS interior - but the overall effect isn't one you have seen before. The fresh, swooping lines of the dash complement the use of traditional wood and leather.
