Compact SUV: Nissan X-Trail

In 2005, CAP predicted the top-spec diesel version of Nissan’s acclaimed X-Trail would still be in vogue in 2008, so estimated it would make £8,625 with 50,000 miles on the clock – as a trade-in. Normally, a second-hand buyer would pay more than £10,000.

Instead, the crunch has bitten off 70 per cent from this sat-nav-equipped car, dropping it to £6,300. Nibbling away at the price further is the patchy reliability of the 136bhp 2.2-litre diesel, which can suffer from failed turbos and fuel pumps. If that puts you off, we found a three-year-old 2.5-litre petrol Sport in a Nissan dealer selling for £5,495, which is less than 30 per cent of its list price new.
