People carrier: Renault Grand Scenic

Renault Grand Scenic 1.9 dCi Dynamique

December 2008

Families with a child count above the average are well served for cheap cars right now. With its third row of rear seats disappearing under the boot floor, the Renault Grand Scenic is one of the roomiest and easiest to use of its kind. Yet it comfortably wins the price crash award, losing nearly three-quarters of its value. And that’s with the 128bhp diesel offering 47mpg.

Drop down to a 1.6-litre petrol, and a three-year-old Grand Scenic with less than 60,000 miles is available for around £3,500. The Renault hasn’t been the most reliable, with electronic gadgets such as the hands-free key system known to fail. If that puts you off, the bigger, old-shape Ford Galaxy sheds similar amounts, with equivalent diesels available from £7,000.
