Could this be the car to knock Ferrari off its perch? The recently revealed 548 Italia won’t be the only mid-engined V8 supercar causing a stir in Germany, McLaren is ready to unveil its new baby, too.

And while it might have the same number of cylinders as the outgoing Mercedes SLR McLaren, it promises to be a very different beast. A classic mid-engined rear-wheel drive layout, a V8 producing around 550bhp and a kerbweight of around 1,200kg should ensure heart-stopping performance.

Our latest spy shots show that it shares its low-slung proportions with the iconic McLaren F1, and if it shares even a fraction of the F1’s talents it should be a stunning car to drive.
