Ford Focus Zetec S vs rivals

The new Zetec S models turn up the heat on the Ford Focus. So is the flagship turbo the best warm hatch? We hit the track to test it against its VW and SEAT rivals

Ford Focus Zetec S vs rivals

January 2012

The wait is nearly over for fast Ford fans – but if you simply can’t hold out until July for the hot new Focus ST, help is at hand in the form of the new Zetec S.

In 1.6-litre EcoBoost form, it’s the fastest and most powerful Focus in the line-up. Its turbocharged petrol engine produces 178bhp – up 30bhp on Titanium models – and the family hatch has a bold new look to go with its extra performance.

A full bodykit, 17-inch alloys and LED rear lights set the Zetec S apart, while its suspension has been specially tuned for UK roads.

It’s available with a range of lesser petrol and diesel engines, but the performance flagship tested has plenty of competition.

Buyers looking for a warmed-up family hatch are spoiled for choice. First up is the current class champ, the VW Golf. Its 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine uses a turbo and a supercharger to develop 158bhp.

If you want something even racier, look no further than the Golf’s SEAT cousin. The Leon FR+ is the priciest car here, but with loads of kit and 209bhp on tap, it will push the Focus hard in the race to the chequered flag.

Justice!

Finally both SEAT Leon and Ford Focus are being shown as the cars they both are.... they're both better than the Golf in everyway!

By no_1fordfan on 5 January, 2012, 10:08am

Good comparisons...

However, the SEAT Leon is beginning to feel dated, the interior is about 6 years out of date and exterior is looking a bit old hat compared to whats on the horizon. I really want to see a new Leon now and I think that will put SEAT back on the map.
The Zetec S is impressive, but it needs to be in the right colour and have the bigger alloys to stand out, and why no running lights... and the Golf... yawn..

What About Giulietta?

Oh, I forgot, AE don't like it.....

Hardly fair...

Both the Golf and the Seat are due to be updated in 2012 so this is a pointless comparison as you're not comparing same-generation cars. It's hardly surprising the new Focus beats a 2009 designed Golf that's effectively a facelifted Mk 5, and a Leon that's almost 7 years old (2 years old if you count the facelift). Seat exterior still looks great though!

Looks wise the Ford is awful even when you see it in the metal. Interior is just as bad. Questionable colour/trim combinations and loads of hard cheap plastic everywhere on the centre console and around the dials. Ford even manage to make the leather steering wheel look cheap.

I would expect new Golf and Leon to leapfrog the Focus or at least be on par.

Golf VI vs Golf VII

"I would expect new Golf and Leon to leapfrog the Focus or at least be on par."

You sure? The Golf VII will cost about 20% less to manufacture than the Golf VI.

Very Fair

all is fair in love and war... remember this Golf trounced the previous Focus which was old in the tooth! The next Golf is the next Golf and so is the next Focus. Right now its these two that must face one another. Normally the left foot will step forward before the right one takes its next step. Thats how it is in the motoring world.... the latest often trounces its nearest competition until they too build something better than the benchmark.

This focus is based on the old focus damn it. Facelifted to the bone but it is the same floorpan. It doesn't matter. And don't expect the next golf to be something radical. Bigger wheel base and that is it. Wanna look at it? The new Jetta has it. Companies are deeply cheap inside to profit. They will use what they can for as long as it is good...Look at PSA for example.

Leapfrog over what? Mk1 Focus? Hardly!

http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/275455/driven_ford_focus_16t_zetec_s.html?CMP=NLC-Newsletters&uid=13175373d3a30b0aa330c8ea6a3df587

"With its keener suspension setup, the mk3 Focus feels tauter, cornering with little roll and exuding great balance and body control. The steering is very quick, perhaps more so than you’d like considering its lack of feel (thank the shift from a hydraulic to electric setup), but once you’ve got accustomed to it, you’ll get a real flow going over Britain’s twisty and choppy B-roads. This is helped along by a compliant and well-judged ride that shames most other sporty hatchbacks...

Those who remember the magic of the mk1 Focus and its unlikely agility will find this mk3 iteration lacks such sparkle, but that doesn’t stop it being dynamically capable."

+ Keener and faster Ford Focus
- Still to rediscover the mk1's magic

Bad Design

What on earth happened to the focus? It is grotesque inside and out. Car design seems to go through fashions with manufacturers copying one another. Ford appears to have taken a bit of everything, stuck it together and ended up with the current Focus. The Leon, even though a much older design, simply outshines the focus externally. Cleaner lines, purposeful and stylish.

Rather buy an Octavia vRS

I'd rather spend £22k on a better, faster (150mph - 0-62mph in 7.1secs) Skoda Octavia vRS. More reliable, better looking, better quality, better equipped, better customer service. Simply Clever really. The Focus looks dated already, and very very Korean....

By skorob2010 on 9 January, 2012, 4:41pm

Hocus Focus

Korean! don't you mean Japanese have you seen the new Hyundai I30 it would be the best looking car here, not to mention the slightly smaller but great looking Kia Rio,the focus looks more like an uglier Yaris/Auris.

Facts and Figures

Verdict

Our trio of family cars offers three very different takes on the warm-hatch formula, but which approach is the best solution for motorists who still want fun from their runabout?

The Focus Zetec S came into this contest as the favourite, thanks to Ford’s track record for producing entertaining everyday cars, and it didn’t disappoint. We’re not completely sold on the Zetec S bodykit – we think a different colour scheme would improve matters – but the Ford is still our winner. A combination of comfort, practicality and entertainment value makes it the best choice. But it was pushed all the way by the SEAT Leon.

Driving purists won’t get as much enjoyment from the Leon’s dynamics, but if you value raw performance and in-car gadgets above everything else, the FR+ is hard to beat. We also think it’s the most stylish choice.

That leaves the unconvincing VW Golf to bring up the rear. In GT trim, its understated looks and classy cabin are sure to appeal, but its firm suspension spoils comfort without delivering the kind of driving experience that you get from the Ford or SEAT.

1. Ford Focus Zetec S
In EcoBoost guise, the Zetec S is a talented all-rounder, and a welcome addition to the Focus range. We’re not big fans of the styling tweaks, but the Ford drives brilliantly. We only wish its more powerful engine was available in other models across the line-up.

2. SEAT Leon FR+
If you want a go-faster family hatch that leaves rivals trailing in its wake, this is the car for you. The Leon has the raciest character thanks to its sporty styling and punchy 2.0-litre engine. And while it’s expensive, the FR+ comes loaded with desirable features.

3. VW Golf GT
It's rare to find a Golf relegated to third place in any road test, but the 1.4 TSI GT is one of the weakest models in the range. It has the pace to match its warm-hatch billing, but it’s not as comfortable, fun or distinctive as it should be.
