Morgan 4/4

Morgan 4/4
  • Rating:
  • For : Heritage, character, charm
  • Against : Hardly sophisticated or refined
Deeply traditional Morgan has been doing some extravagant things recently. A couple of years ago it added some very modern developments, with comfort and cosmetic changes which included revised seats, an electrically heated windscreen, longer doors and a two-inch longer cockpit.

For now though, the range continues with those familiar vintage curves. Three related body styles are the budget 4/4, the chunkier Plus 4 and the mighty Plus 8. Two seats is the usual configuration, although the Plus 4 (above) can be had with a rather ugly four-seat option. Engine choices include a 1.8-litre Ford Zetec (4/4), a 2.0-litre Rover unit (Plus 4) and two versions of Rover's V8 (Plus 8). Despite the recent improvements, Morgans continue to be cars for occasional use, the fiddly roof, and resulting poor visibility making them less than ideal in the wet. In drier conditions, however, the Morgan driving experience, of course, retains the historic charm and eccentricity despite the improvements. Hardly a match for a modern sports car in terms of refinement, there's little to touch it for character.
