Talk about a scoop! We managed to get hold of a new BMW 3-Series Coupé well ahead of its launch. And not just any model, but the eagerly anticipated 335Ci, with its 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine. It lacks the aggressive lines of the M Coupé, but as is clear from its placing, we rate it much more highly.

The balanced, rear-drive chassis is combined with accurate steering and a pliant ride to make a car that corners crisply and smoothly.
This is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. While the looks may not set pulses racing, once behind the wheel, it was a different matter. Not in terms of design, though. As with the understated exterior, the driving environment is standard fare to those familiar with the 3-Series saloon.

In typical BMW fashion, the engine is the 335Ci’s centrepiece. Quite simply, it’s one of the most amazing motors we’ve sampled all year. The direct-injection unit is potent, and the sequential turbos are on tap from tickover, meaning the 400Nm torque output peaks at only 1,300rpm.

It never feels that fast because the acceleration is so linear, yet in our hands it matched the performance of the current M3, blasting from 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds. Performance in every gear is superb, and there’s no turbo lag.

Enjoyable rather than intoxicating, the 335Ci is great in everyday conditions. The balanced, rear-drive chassis is combined with accurate steering and a pliant ride to make a car that corners crisply and smoothly. The BMW was nimble at the track, too, giving it the edge over the TT. So there’s no doubt the 335Ci is a polished performer.
