The company has teamed up with leading sportswear company Umbro to produce the X Boot III.
Michelin claims to have tapped into the knowledge it’s built up as a Formula One tyre supplier over the past few years to develop footwear that offers more grip in the wet.
And if it enjoys as much success on the pitch as it has in GP racing – where it’s provided rubber for 2005 and 2006 world champ Renault – the X Boot III promises to be the Brazil of football boots. As with its motorsport tyres, the maker has tailored the compounds used in the boot to suit a specific purpose.
The surface on the instep is sticky to the touch, for better ball control, while Michelin claims the blend of rubber and suede at the front of the boot gives a 90 per cent improvement in control, touch and kicking accuracy. Meanwhile, the careful definition of the toe is also said to help when shooting.
Each sole has 13 moulded studs, and the tongues stick down with Velcro to stop the laces getting in the way when striking the ball.
