Scientists at Rome University have been leading the £2million project for more than two years, but Bertone’s sketches for the driver’s seat show that something extraordinary is being planned by the Swedish manufacturer.
They reveal a small console that operates the car which can either be folded away or removed completely. Outside, each wheel of the fuel cell hybrid will be fully steerable through 90 degrees, so on-street parking will be simple. The wheels have electric motors in their hubs. These are powered by batteries which are topped up by a hydrogen fuel cell, and all the controls are drive-by-wire, with no mechanical links.
